Abstract

A lockable cap, is a security feature for a medical prescription bottle. The lockable cap has a dial locking mechanism that is attached to the cap and the dial locking mechanism and the cap can be attached or removed from the bottle only when the user has the correct combination on the dial lock.

Claims (43)

1. A cap lock attachable to a bottle comprising:

a housing having a cap portion and a base portion, said cap portion having an upper surface with a plurality of first gaps therein, said housing including;

an alignment spacer device mounted within said housing;

a rotatable dial lock mounted within said alignment spacer device, said rotatable dial lock having numeric cogs and standard cams in mechanical relationship with each other to allow said cogs to spin independently, said cogs settable to a plurality of settings;

a dog plate, mounted to said housing for free rotation in the housing, said dog plate having a set of gear teeth, said set of gear teeth for allowing at least one point of contact for said locking plate to exert sufficient tension to remove said cap;

a locking plate above the rotatable dial lock having a plurality of second gaps and pivotally mounted to said alignment spacer device above said rotatable dial lock, and movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, and such that said plurality of second gaps are in alignment with said plurality of first gaps whereby said numeric cogs are held in place by said plurality of first gaps and said plurality of second gaps;

said locking plate being placed in said unlocked position when said cogs are set to a predetermined one of said plurality of settings, and said locking plate being placed in said locked position when said cogs are set to one of said plurality of settings other than said predetermined setting; and

the locking plate having a reset access by which the identity of said predetermined setting can be reset using a reset pin when the locking plate is in the unlocked position and the reset pin being blocked by an arm of the locking plate when said locking plate is in said locked position.

2. The cap lock of claim 1 wherein said alignment spacer device is mounted to said housing by a snap fit.

3. The cap lock of claim 2 wherein said alignment spacing device has at least one channel for guiding said cogs to alignment with said plurality of first gaps.

4. The cap lock of claim 3 wherein said channel provides non-rotation permanent mounting of said alignment spacer device in said housing.

5. The cap lock of claim 1 wherein said base portion is permanently attached to said housing by an interlocking fit between said base portion and said housing.

6. The cap lock of claim 1 wherein said locking plate has an extension that can be placed into engagement or disengagement with said dog plate, said locking plate being placed in said locked position comprising at least one of said cams placing said extension into disengagement with said dog plate whereby said cap cannot be removed from said bottle.

7. The cap lock of claim 5 wherein said interlocking fit is a snap fit.

8. The cap lock of claim 1 , wherein said set of gear teeth of said dog plate rotate and said release component includes a portion that connects with said set of gear teeth.

9. The cap lock of claim 8 wherein the position at which said portion connects to said set of gear teeth depends the position of said dial lock with relation to said dog plate.

10. The cap of claim 8 wherein said set of gear teeth slip when said locking plate is in said locked position.

11. The cap of claim 8 wherein said set of gear teeth cannot slip when said locking plate is in said unlocked position.

12. The cap lock of claim 8 wherein said set of gear teeth of said dog plate rotate horizontally with respect to the upper surface of said cap portion.

13. A method of manufacturing a cap lock attachable to a bottle comprising:

providing a housing having a cap portion and a base portion, said cap portion having an upper surface with a plurality of first gaps therein;

providing an alignment spacer device and mounting said alignment spacer device within said housing;

providing a rotatable dial lock having numeric cogs and standard cams in mechanical relationship with each other to allow said cogs to spin independently, said cogs settable to a plurality of settings;

mounting said rotatable dial lock within said alignment spacer device;

providing a dog plate attachable to said bottle and having a set of gear teeth, said set of gear teeth for allowing at least one point of contact for a locking plate to exert sufficient tension to remove said cap;

mounting said dog plate directly underneath the rotatable dial lock to said housing for free rotation;

pivotally mounting said locking plate above the rotatable dial lock to said alignment spacer device above said rotatable dial lock, wherein the locking plate has a plurality of second gaps and movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, such that,

(a) said plurality of second gaps are in alignment with said plurality of first gaps whereby said numeric cogs are held in place by said plurality of first gaps and said plurality of second gaps, and

(b) said locking plate is capable of being placed in said unlocked position when said cogs are set to a predetermined one of said plurality of settings,

(c) said locking plate is capable of being placed in said locked position when said cogs are set to one of said plurality of settings other than said predetermined setting,

(d) allowing the identity of said predetermined setting to be reset by placing a reset pin through a reset access of the locking plate when said locking plate is in said unlocked position, and

(e) blocking, by an arm of the locking plate, the reset pin when said locking plate is in said locked position.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein said alignment spacer device includes a release component allowing the identity of said predetermined setting to be reset when said locking plate is in said unlocked position, said locking plate blocking said release component when said locking plate is in said locked position.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein said alignment spacer device is mounted to said housing by a snap fit.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein said alignment spacer device has at least one channel for guiding said cogs to alignment with said plurality of first gaps.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein said channel provides non-rotation permanent mounting of said alignment spacer device in said housing.

18. The method of claim 13 wherein said base portion is permanently attached to said housing by an interlocking fit between said base portion and said housing.

19. The method of claim 13 wherein said locking plate has an extension that can be placed into disengagement with said dog plate, said locking plate being placed in said locked position comprising at least one of said cams placing said extension into disengagement with said dog plate whereby said cap cannot be removed from said bottle.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein said interlocking fit is a snap fit.

21. The method of claim 14 wherein said set of gear teeth of said dog plate rotate and said locking plate includes a portion that connects with said set of gear teeth.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein said set of gear teeth slip when said locking plate is in said locked position.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein said set of gear teeth cannot slip when said locking plate is in said unlocked position.

24. The method of claim 21 wherein said set of gear teeth of said dog plate rotate horizontally with respect to the upper surface of said cap portion.
