Methods and systems for protecting credit card account information
View Patent ↗The invention provides systems and methods for protecting information related to credit card accounts and other kinds of information displayed on personal and identification cards. In some embodiments, the invention further provides a credit card with a card portion displaying a first part of an account number and an electronically readable region. The credit card may also include a sleeve portion that holds the card portion and that may display a second part of an account number. The sleeve portion may have a window through which the first part of the account number is visible, so that the first and second parts of the account number provide a complete valid account number.
1. A method of retrofitting a credit card with an electronically readable region to protect a visibly complete account number comprising the steps:
attaching an adhesive mask to the credit card to cover at least a portion of the visibly complete account number thereby providing a card portion displaying only a first part of the account number;
inserting the card portion into a sheath portion having imprinted thereon a second part of the account number, wherein the sheath portion is formed with a window through which the first part of the account number is visible, and wherein the first part and second part of the account number provide a complete valid account number; and
storing the card portion and the sheath portion together, whereby the card portion is selectively removed from the sheath portion to conduct a transaction via the electronically readable region without the sheath portion, and wherein only the first part of the account number imprinted on the card portion is visible during the transaction which is conducted without releasing the complete valid account number.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein the adhesive mask is formed of tamper evident tape or spongy material.
3. The method of claim 2 wherein the tamper evident tape includes a logo for a credit card company.
4. A credit card protection kit comprising: a set of instructions describing the method of claim 1 .
5. The method of claim 1 wherein the sheath portion includes one or more of the following: a name and/or signature of a card holder, a valid thru (expiry) date, a credit card logo or hologram.

The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of: comparing to credit card authorization information for the transaction that is printed on a merchant copy of a receipt or a customer copy of a receipt with the first part of the account number imprinted on the card portion to confirm valid account number.

The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of: comparing to credit card authorization information for the transaction that is printed on a merchant copy of a receipt or a customer copy of a receipt with the second part of the account number imprinted on the sheath portion to confirm valid account number.

The method of claim 1 wherein either the card portion or the sheath portion includes at least one of the following security codes: a Card Security Code (CSC), a Card Verification Value (CVV or CV2), a Card Verification Value Code (CVVC), a Card Verification Code (CVC), a Verification Code (V-Code or V Code), or a Card Code Verification (CCV).
