Abstract

The method and system described herein relate to stimulating nerve tissue using a pulse generator. A stimulus is created that comprises a signal that is produced from a frequency spectrum having a power spectral density per unit of bandwidth proportional to 1/f β , wherein β is excludes 0. The stimulus is provided from the pulse generator to at least one stimulation lead; and applied to nerve tissue via one or several electrodes.

Claims (22)

1. A method of stimulating nerve tissue of a patient using a pulse generator, comprising:

generating, by a pulse generator, a stimulus that comprises a signal that is produced from a frequency spectrum having a power spectral density per unit of bandwidth proportional to 1/f^β;

providing the stimulus from the pulse generator to at least one stimulation lead; and

applying the stimulus to nerve tissue of the patient via one or several electrode of the at least one stimulation lead, wherein β=2.

2. A method of stimulating nerve tissue of a patient using a pulse generator, comprising:

storing, in the pulse generator, one first stimulation parameter that defines a frequency to be used as the lower bound of a frequency spectrum;

storing, in the pulse generator, one second stimulation parameter that defines a frequency to be used as the upper bound of a frequency spectrum;

generating, by pulse generator, a stimulus that comprises a frequency spectrum between the first stimulation parameter and second stimulation parameter;

providing the stimulus from the implantable pulse generator to at least one stimulation lead; and

applying the stimulus to nerve tissue of the patient via at least one electrode of the at least one stimulation lead, wherein the stimulus is further defined as having a power spectral density proportional to 1/f^β, and wherein β=2.

3. A method of treating a neurological disorder in a patient using electrical stimulation by an implantable pulse generator, the method comprising:

programming the implantable pulse generator to include a first stimulation program and a second stimulation program, wherein (i) the implantable pulse generator is operable to generate one or more sequences of pulses according to a variable noise component having a shaped spectral power density controlled by a noise parameter, (ii) the first stimulation program is for an active state of the patient, B1 is a value selected for the noise parameter for the first stimulation program, and a spectral profile defined by the first stimulation program is related to 1/f^B1 where f represents frequency, (iii) the second stimulation program is for a rest state of the patient, B2 is a value selected for the noise parameter for the second stimulation program, and a spectral profile defined by the second stimulation program is related to 1/f^B2 where f represents frequency, and (iv) B1 is greater than or equal to 1 and B2 is greater than B1 such that the second stimulation program exhibits lower power density at higher frequencies than the first stimulation program;

operating the implantable pulse generator to generate electrical pulses according to the first stimulation program during an active state of the patient and to generate electrical pulses according to the second stimulation program during a rest state of the patient; and

delivering pulses generated by the implantable pulse generator to nerve tissue of the patient using one or more electrodes of one or more stimulation leads.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the programming comprises selecting a spectral peak for at least one of the first stimulation program and the second stimulation program.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein electrical pulses are delivered to a primary or secondary cortical site and the spectral peak is selected within an alpha frequency band.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein electrical pulses are delivered to an association cortical site and the spectral peak is selected within an beta frequency band.

7. The method of claim 4 wherein electrical pulses are delivered to a cingulate, hippocampus, or amygdala site and the spectral peak is selected within a theta frequency band.

8. The method of claim 4 wherein electrical pulses are delivered to a brainstem, ventral tegmental area (VTA), nucleus accumbens, or ventral medial prefrontal cortex site and the spectral peak is selected within a delta frequency band.

9. The method of claim 4 wherein the nerve tissue of the patient is located within the brain of the patient.

10. The method of claim 4 wherein the nerve tissue of the patient is located within a peripheral nerve of the patient.

11. The method of claim 4 wherein the nerve tissue of the patient is located within the spinal cord of the patient.
