Abstract

A dressing for treating a damaged tissue, incorporates a pair of electrodes and a conductive gel between the electrodes. An electric current passes between the electrodes through the gel to repair the damaged tissue. Sensors can be incorporated into the dressing along with a control unit. The control unit can vary the current supplied to the electrodes according to environmental parameters detected by the sensors. Alternatively, one or more pre-defined programs can be stored in the control unit for supplying an alternating current to the electrodes with a varying amplitude, frequency and waveform.

Claims (24)

1. A device for treating a damaged tissue, the device comprising:

a dressing having a treatment surface for applying to a treatment area of said damaged tissue;

a pair of electrodes affixed on said treatment surface of the dressing; and

a control unit for passing an alternating current between the electrodes to the treatment area between the electrodes and for constantly varying a value of an amplitude of the alternating current and a frequency of the alternating current to electrically stimulate and repair said damaged tissue,

wherein the alternating current is varied between 50 and 500 microamps.

2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the control unit and the dressing are integrated with each other.

3. The device according to claim 2 , wherein the control unit is etched into a substrate.

4. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the frequency of the alternating current is varied between 10 and 900 hertz.

5. The device according to claim 1 , wherein a time period between each variation of the amplitude is 0.1 s.

6. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the alternating current has a ramp waveform.

7. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the control unit comprises:

a housing; and

electronic circuitry in the housing connected to the pair of electrodes.

8. The device according to claim 7 , wherein the electronic circuitry comprises a memory storing at least one program for determining the amplitude, the frequency and a waveform of the alternating current supplied to the electrodes.

9. The device according to claim 8 , wherein the control unit further comprises an input/output port connected to the electronic circuitry, such that an external device can connect to the control unit via the input/output port and update the memory and control operation of the control unit.

The device according to claim 9 , wherein the control unit further comprises a wireless transceiver connected to the electronic circuitry, such that the external device can wirelessly connect to the control unit via the input/output port and update the memory and control operation of the control unit.

11. The device according to claim 7 , wherein the control unit comprises:

a pair of activation electrodes; and

a removable tab including a metallic strip connecting the activation electrodes,

wherein the electronic circuitry detects when a current can pass between the activation electrodes and only supplies the alternating current to the pair of electrodes when the tab is removed such that no current passes between the activation electrodes.

12. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the dressing is adapted to be applied to a wound.

13. The device according to claim 12 , wherein the dressing is adapted to absorb an exudate from the wound.

14. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the dressing comprises a tissue gel that can be absorbed by a wound.

15. The device according to claim 14 , wherein the tissue gel comprises a hydropolymer that releases oxygen molecules when the alternating current flows through the tissue gel.
