Abstract

An environmental testing system for environmental testing with particulate matter, such as sand and dust, is disclosed. The testing system uses a feeder to feed precise amounts of particulate matter into an injector, which injects the particulate matter into the airflow leading to a test chamber with approximately the same velocity as the surrounding airflow. The feeder may be a loss-in-weight gravimetric feeder, and the injector may be a Venturi valve actuated by compressed air. The system also includes operator protection features, such as an exhaust fan that creates negative pressure when the door to the test chamber is opened, and when particulate matter is dumped into the system. A temperature control system heats and cools the airflow during tests, a pneumatic conveying system moves fluidized particulate matter into and out of the system, and a controller provides automatic control over the system.

Claims (41)

1. An environmental testing system, comprising:

an environmental test chamber having an interior volume into which a test piece can be placed for testing, the environmental test chamber having an inlet, an outlet, and an openable door through which the interior volume can be accessed;

an inlet duct in communication with the inlet;

a particulate matter feed mechanism coupled to the inlet duct, the particulate matter feed mechanism including:

an injector positioned within the inlet duct, the injector being constructed and arranged to inject particulate matter into the inlet duct with a velocity that at least substantially matches the velocity of a surrounding airflow in the inlet duct, and

a feeder connected to the injector, the feeder being constructed and arranged to accept particulate matter from a feed hopper and feed the particulate matter in defined amounts into the injector;

an outlet duct in communication with the outlet;

a filter chamber in communication with the outlet duct, the filter chamber being provided with one or more filter elements constructed and arranged to remove particulate matter from air leaving the environmental test chamber through the outlet duct; and

a blower coupled between the filter chamber and the inlet duct such that an inlet of the blower is exposed to filtered air from the filter chamber, the blower being constructed and arranged to create an airflow within the environmental testing system.

2. The environmental testing system of claim 1 , wherein the feeder comprises a loss-in-weight gravimetric feeder.

3. The environmental testing system of claim 1 , wherein the injector comprises a Venturi valve.

4. The environmental testing system of claim 3 , further comprising a compressed air system coupled to the Venturi valve, the compressed air system being adapted to supply compressed air to the Venturi valve to actuate the Venturi valve.

5. The environmental testing system of claim 4 , wherein the compressed air system comprises:

a compressor;

a reservoir tank connected to the compressor; and

a dryer connected between the reservoir tank and the Venturi valve.

6. The environmental testing system of claim 1 , further comprising a heating system and a cooling system.

7. The environmental testing system of claim 6 , further comprising first and second ducts coupled between the filter chamber and the blower,

the first duct providing a flow pathway between the filter chamber and the blower;

the second duct providing a flow pathway between the filter chamber and the blower and having a heating element and a cooling element arranged to heat or cool air flowing through the second duct; and

at least one damper in the first duct or the second duct, the damper being constructed and arranged to cause air to flow selectively either into the first duct or into the second duct.

8. The environmental testing system of claim 1 , wherein the environmental test chamber includes a support mounted for rotation about a generally vertical axis of rotation, the support being coupled to a motor.

9. The environmental testing system of claim 1 , wherein the environmental test chamber includes a selectively openable airflow outlet in a wall thereof, and the system further comprises:

a set of exhaust filtration elements coupled to the airflow outlet;

an exhaust fan constructed and arranged to draw air out of the environmental test chamber through the airflow outlet and through the exhaust filtration elements; and

an exhaust outlet located downstream from the exhaust fan;

wherein the airflow outlet is opened and the exhaust fan activated at least when the door of the environmental test chamber is opened.

10. The environmental testing system of claim 9 , further comprising:

a particulate matter input station including an input hopper, the particulate matter input station being in fluid communication with the set of exhaust filtration elements and the exhaust fan, such that the exhaust fan is arranged to create a negative pressure within the particulate matter input station.

11. The environmental testing system of claim 10 , the particulate matter input station further comprising:

a lid covering the input hopper, wherein the exhaust fan is activated to create the negative pressure at least when the lid covering the input hopper is opened.

12. The environmental testing system of claim 11 , the particulate matter input station further comprising:

an outlet opening in the input hopper;

a pipe connected to the outlet opening;

an outlet feed mechanism connected between the outlet opening and the pipe, the outlet feed mechanism being adapted to feed particulate matter from the outlet opening into the pipe; and

an air inlet opening.

13. The environmental testing system of claim 12 , further comprising a feed hopper connected to the particulate matter feed mechanism, the feed hopper being arranged to feed particulate matter into the particulate matter feed mechanism.

14. The environmental testing system of claim 13 , further comprising:

a pump coupled directly or indirectly to the outlet opening in the input hopper and a feed inlet of the feed hopper connected to the particulate matter feed mechanism;

wherein the pump is constructed and arranged to draw fluidized particulate matter from the input hopper to the feed hopper.

15. The environmental testing system of claim 14 , wherein the pipe connected to the outlet opening of the input hopper comprises a portion of a network of pipes connected between the environmental test chamber, the filter chamber, the feed hopper, and a waste hopper, the network of pipes including one or more flow-directing valves or gates, such that the network of pipes is adapted to (1) draw fluidized particulate matter from the input hopper to the feed hopper, (2) collect used particulate matter from the environmental test chamber and the filter chamber, and (3) direct used particulate matter back to the feed hopper or to the waste hopper.
