Abstract

Systems and methods for a chainsaw safety device are described. In some embodiments, a method comprises activating a chainsaw, receiving a first acceleration value associated with acceleration of the chainsaw, comparing the first acceleration value to a predetermined acceleration threshold, and deactivating the chainsaw based on the comparison.

Claims (30)

1. A chainsaw comprising:

an accelerometer configured to generate three acceleration values, the three acceleration values being in three different directions, and each of the three acceleration values being based on an acceleration of the chainsaw;

a comparison module configured to compare the three acceleration values to a predetermined acceleration threshold and configured to generate a risk signal based on the comparison, wherein the predetermined acceleration threshold comprises a first predetermined acceleration threshold, a second predetermined acceleration threshold, and a third predetermined acceleration threshold, and wherein the comparison module comprises a first comparator configured to compare a first of the three acceleration values to the first predetermined acceleration threshold, a second comparator configured to compare a second of the three acceleration values to the second predetermined acceleration threshold, and a third comparator configured to compare a third of the three acceleration values to the third predetermined acceleration threshold; and

a circuit breaker coupled to the comparison module, the circuit breaker configured to trigger a kill switch in response to the risk signal, thereby deactivating the chainsaw in response to the risk signal.

2. The chainsaw of claim 1 , wherein the comparison module further comprises a microprocessor configured to perform the comparison.

3. The chainsaw of claim 1 , wherein the comparison module further comprises a microprocessor configured to sample each of the three accelerator values from the accelerometer.

4. The chainsaw of claim 1 , wherein the comparison module further comprises a microprocessor configured to execute instructions to modify the first predetermined acceleration threshold.

5. The chainsaw of claim 1 , wherein the comparison module further comprises a low pass filter configured to filter the three acceleration values based on a predetermined duration threshold.

6. The chainsaw of claim 5 , wherein the low pass filter comprises a capacitance filter, and the predetermined duration threshold is based on the capacitance filter of the low pass filter.

7. The chainsaw of claim 1 , further comprising a first potentiometer coupled to the first comparator, wherein the first potentiometer is configured to set the first predetermined acceleration threshold.

8. The chainsaw of claim 1 , wherein one of the three acceleration directions is along one of: an x axis parallel to the blade of the chainsaw; a y axis orthogonal to the blade of the chainsaw and orthogonal to a front handle of the chainsaw; and a z axis orthogonal to the blade of the chainsaw and parallel to a front handle of the chainsaw.

9. The chainsaw of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined acceleration threshold corresponds to a kickback of the chainsaw.

10. The chainsaw of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined acceleration threshold corresponds to the chainsaw being dropped.

11. The chainsaw of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined acceleration threshold indicates that the chainsaw has been dropped.

12. A chainsaw comprising:

means for generating three acceleration values, the three acceleration values being in three different directions, and each of the three acceleration values being based on an acceleration of the chainsaw;

means for comparing the three acceleration values to a predetermined acceleration threshold and for generating a risk signal based on the comparison, wherein the predetermined acceleration threshold comprises a first predetermined acceleration threshold, a second predetermined acceleration threshold, and a third predetermined acceleration threshold, and wherein the means for comparing the three acceleration values to the predetermined acceleration threshold and for generating the risk signal based on the comparison comprises means for comparing a first of the three acceleration values to the first predetermined acceleration threshold, means for comparing a second of the three acceleration values to the second predetermined acceleration threshold, and means for comparing a third of the three acceleration values to the third predetermined acceleration threshold; and

means for triggering a kill switch in response to the risk signal, thereby deactivating the chainsaw in response to the risk signal.

13. A method of using a chainsaw, the method comprising:

generating three acceleration values, the three acceleration values being in three different directions, and each of the three acceleration values being based on an acceleration of the chainsaw;

comparing the three acceleration values to a predetermined acceleration threshold, wherein the predetermined acceleration threshold comprises a first predetermined acceleration threshold, a second predetermined acceleration threshold, and a third predetermined acceleration threshold, and wherein the comparison comprises comparing a first of the three acceleration values to the first predetermined acceleration threshold, comparing a second of the three acceleration values to the second predetermined acceleration threshold, and comparing a third of the three acceleration values to the third predetermined acceleration threshold;

generating a risk signal based on the comparison; and

triggering a kill switch in response to the risk signal, thereby deactivating the chainsaw in response to the risk signal.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the comparison is performed by a microprocessor incorporated into a comparison module.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising filtering the three acceleration values based on a predetermined duration threshold.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the predetermined duration threshold is based on a capacitance filter of a low pass filter.

17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising using a first potentiometer to set the first predetermined acceleration threshold.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein one of the three different acceleration directions is along one of: an axis parallel to a blade of the chainsaw; an axis orthogonal to a blade of the chainsaw and orthogonal to a front handle of the chainsaw; and an axis orthogonal to a blade of the chainsaw and parallel to a front handle of the chainsaw.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the predetermined acceleration threshold corresponds to a kickback of the chainsaw.
