Abstract

An apparatus is for detecting the presence of selected gaseous compounds indicative of a medical condition includes a probe having one or more sensor elements having a conductivity which is responsive to the presence of selected gaseous compounds, at least one sensor element containing a transition metal oxide selected from the group consisting of WO 3 , beta-MoO 3 and UO 2 ; and means for measuring the conductivity of each said sensor element.

Claims (12)

1. An apparatus for selectively detecting a presence of a gaseous compound in a mixture of gases, wherein said apparatus comprises a probe comprising:

a) a first sensor selectively responsive to the presence of a gaseous oxidizing compound, a second sensor selectively responsive to a gaseous reducing compound containing no nitrogen, and a third sensor selectively responsive to a gaseous reducing compound containing nitrogen, each of said sensors comprising a transition metal oxide deposited as a film on a substrate, said substrate comprising an electrode, said film having a conductivity that is selectively responsive to said gaseous compound, wherein said metal oxide in said first sensor comprise rhenium oxide structured metal oxide, said metal oxide in said second sensor comprise rutile structured metal oxide, and said metal oxide in said third sensor comprise alpha molybdenum trioxide-structured metal oxide;

b) a chamber for exposing the probe to a breath of a subject such that said probe responds selectively to a gaseous component in said breath; and

c) an analyzer electrically connected to each of said sensors such that said analyzer measures said changes in said conductivity of each of said sensors.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said transition metal oxides in said first sensor are selected from the group consisting of one or more of tungsten trioxide, beta molybdenum trioxide and uranium dioxide.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said beta molybdenum trioxide is monoclinic.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the tungsten trioxide is orthorhombic.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said transition metal oxides in said second sensor are selected from the group consisting of one or more of titanium dioxide, chromium dioxide, tin dioxide, iridium dioxide, beta manganese dioxide, titanium dioxide-alpha molybdenum trioxide and titanium dioxide-beta molybdenum trioxide.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said transition metal oxide in said third sensor is alpha molybdenum trioxide.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said analyzer comprises a computer.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein said analyzer compares said changes in conductivity from each sensor to a known signature stored in the memory of said computer.

9. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the tungsten trioxide is monoclinic.
