Abstract

A comparative expertise level-based discovery system infers an expertise level associated with a system user from a plurality of usage behaviors and compares this expertise level with expertise levels associated with computer-implemented objects. One or more of the computer-implemented objects are selected for delivery to the user in accordance with a comparison of the inferred expertise level of the user and the expertise levels associated with the computer-implemented objects. The expertise levels associated with the computer-implemented objects may be inferred from information within the objects such as text and/or may be inferred from usage behaviors. Inferences of interests of the user may further inform the selection of one or more of the computer-implemented objects for delivery to the user. Explanations for the delivery of the computer-implemented objects may be provided to the user.

inferring automatically the first expertise level from the plurality of usage behaviors, wherein the plurality of usage behaviors are associated with a plurality of usage behavior categories.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

accessing the plurality of expertise levels that are associated with each of the plurality of computer-implemented objects, wherein the computer-implemented objects comprise text-based information.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

accessing the plurality of expertise levels that are associated with each of the plurality of computer-implemented objects, wherein the plurality of expertise values are automatically inferred from the text-based information.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

accessing the plurality of expertise levels that are associated with each of the plurality of computer-implemented objects, wherein the plurality of expertise levels are associated with a plurality of users of the computer-implemented system who are each represented by one of the plurality of the computer-implemented objects.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

accessing the plurality of expertise levels that are associated with each of the plurality of computer-implemented objects, wherein the plurality of expertise levels are associated with the plurality of users of the computer-implemented system who are each represented by one of the plurality of the computer-implemented objects, wherein the expertise values are inferred automatically from usage behaviors.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

selecting the first computer-implemented object of the plurality of computer-implemented objects, wherein the selecting is performed by the computer-implemented function executed on the processor-based device in accordance with an automatically inferred interest of the first person, wherein the inferred interest is based on a plurality of usage behaviors.

8. A computer-implemented system comprising one or more processor-based devices configured to execute:

an expertise inference function that infers a first expertise level of a first person who is a first user of a computer-implemented system from a plurality of usage behaviors;

an expertise access function that accesses a plurality of expertise levels, wherein each of the plurality of expertise levels are associated with each of a plurality of computer-implemented objects;

a discovery function that selects a first computer-implemented object of the plurality of computer-implemented objects, wherein the selection of the first computer-implemented object is performed in accordance with a comparison of the first expertise level of the first person with a second expertise level of the plurality of expertise levels that are associated with each of the plurality of computer-implemented objects; and

9. The system of claim 8 comprising the one or more processor-based devices configured to execute:

the expertise inference function that infers the first expertise level of the first person who is the first user of the computer-implemented system from the plurality of usage behaviors, wherein the plurality of usage behaviors are associated with a plurality of usage behavior categories.

10. The system of claim 8 , further comprising the one or more processor-based devices configured to execute:

the expertise access function that accesses the plurality of expertise levels that are associated with each of the plurality of computer-implemented objects, wherein the computer-implemented objects comprise text-based information.

11. The system of claim 10 comprising the one or more processor-based devices configured to execute:

the expertise access function that accesses the plurality of expertise levels that are associated with each of the plurality of computer-implemented objects, wherein the plurality of expertise values are automatically inferred from the text-based information.

12. The system of claim 8 comprising the one or more processor-based devices configured to execute:

the expertise access function that accesses the plurality of expertise levels that are associated with each of the plurality of computer-implemented objects, wherein the plurality of expertise levels are associated with a plurality of users of the computer-implemented system who are each represented by one of the plurality of the computer-implemented objects.

13. The system of claim 12 comprising the one or more processor-based devices configured to execute:

the expertise access function that accesses the plurality of expertise levels that are associated with each of the plurality of computer-implemented objects, wherein the plurality of expertise levels are associated with the plurality of users of the computer-implemented system who are each represented by one of the plurality of the computer-implemented objects, wherein the plurality of expertise values are inferred from usage behaviors.

14. The system of claim 8 comprising the one or more processor-based devices configured to execute:
