Abstract

A data center includes a floor that supports rack computing systems and walls that enclose a computing room. The computing room holds the rack computing systems. One of the walls is a movable wall. The movable wall translates relative to the other walls to increase or decrease the size of the computing room.

one or more movable interior walls, wherein each of at least one of the one or more movable interior walls substantially spans the opposing parallel interior walls, wherein at least one of the one or more movable interior walls is configured to translate relative to at least the plurality of fixed exterior walls to increase or decrease a length of the computing room within the fixed interior space of the data center.

2. The data center of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more movable interior walls comprises one or more rollers, wherein the at least one of the one or more movable interior walls is configured to roll to increase or decrease the length of the computing room.

3. The data center of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more movable interior walls is powered to be moved to increase or decrease the length of the computing room.

4. The data center of claim 1 , further comprising one or more rails at least partially extending through the fixed interior space externally to the computing room, wherein at least one of the one or more movable interior walls moves along at least one of the one or more rails through a portion of the fixed interior space external to the computing room to increase or decrease the length of the computing room within the fixed interior space of the data center.

5. The data center of claim 1 , wherein the movable wall divides a computing space of the data center from a non-computing space of the data center.

6. A data center, comprising:

a floor configured to support one or more rack computing systems; and

a plurality of walls at least partially enclosing a fixed interior space of the data center, a portion of the interior space comprising a computing room, wherein the computing room is configured to hold at least one of the rack computing systems;

wherein the plurality of walls comprise a plurality of fixed exterior walls defining the fixed interior space, a plurality of parallel interior walls each spanning the fixed interior space between fixed exterior walls at opposite ends of the fixed interior space and at least partially defining the computing room within the fixed interior space, and one or more movable walls located within the fixed interior space and at least partially defining the computing room within the fixed interior space, wherein at least one of the movable walls is configured to translate relative to at least one of the fixed exterior walls to increase or decrease the size of the computing room within the fixed interior space.

7. The data center of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of walls comprise two or more movable walls, wherein each of at least two of the movable walls is configured to translate relative to one or more other walls to increase or decrease the size of the computing room.

8. The data center of claim 6 , wherein at least one of the movable walls comprises rollers.

9. The data center of claim 6 , wherein at least one of the movable walls is powered.

10. The data center of claim 6 , further comprising one or more rails at least partially extending through the interior space externally to the computing room, wherein at least one of the one or more movable walls moves along at least one of the one or more rails through a portion of the interior space external to the computing room to increase or decrease the length of the computing room within the interior space of the data center.

11. The data center of claim 6 , wherein at least one of the one or more movable walls divides a computing space from a non-computing space.

12. The data center of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the one or more movable walls comprises one or more sealing elements at a junction between the at least one of the one or more movable walls and at least one other wall, wherein the one or more sealing elements are configured to inhibit airflow between the computing space and the non-computing space.

13. The data center of claim 6 , further comprising a power distribution system configured to supply power to computing systems in the computing room through at least one of the plurality of walls.

14. The data center of claim 6 , further comprising a ceiling on the computing room, wherein the at least one movable wall extends substantially to the ceiling.

15. The data center of claim 6 , further comprising an air handling system configured to draw air out through a ceiling of the computing room.

16. A method of changing the size of a computing room, comprising:

providing a fixed interior space at least partially enclosed by a plurality of fixed exterior walls;

providing at least two parallel interior walls each spanning the fixed interior space between the fixed exterior walls at opposite ends of the fixed interior space;

providing a computing room at least partially enclosed by at least one of the at least two parallel interior walls and at least one moveable wall, wherein the computing room is comprised within a portion of the fixed interior space that is at least partially enclosed by the plurality of fixed exterior walls; and

translating the movable wall within the fixed interior space and relative to at least one of the plurality of fixed exterior walls enclosing the computing room to increase or decrease the size of the computing room within the fixed interior space.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein translating the movable wall of the computing room comprises rolling the movable wall on the floor of the computing room.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the movable wall translates on one or more rails through a portion of the fixed interior space external to the computing room to increase or decrease the length of the computing room within the fixed interior space, wherein the one or more rails extend at least partially through the fixed interior space externally to the computing room.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the movable wall divides a computing space from a non-computing space, wherein at least a portion of the non-computing space is unfinished space, the method further comprising:

finishing an expansion zone in the non-computing space; and

translating the movable wall to enlarge the computing room to include the expansion zone; and

operating one or more rack computing systems in the expansion zone.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the movable wall divides a computing space from a non-computing space, wherein the movable wall is translated to increase the size of the computing room to include an expansion zone, the method further comprising reallocating space at the expansion zone from non-computing use to computing use.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein the movable wall divides a computing space from a non-computing space, wherein the movable wall is translated to decrease the size of the computing room in a contraction zone, the method further comprising reallocating space in the contraction zone from computing use to non-computing use.

22. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

translating the movable wall to enlarge the computing room to include an expansion zone; and

supplying power to at least one or more rack computing systems through a portion of a fixed wall in the expansion zone.
