Abstract

Photon-based radiosurgery is widely used for treating local and regional tumors. The key to improving the quality of radiosurgery is to increase the dose falloff rate from high dose regions inside the tumor to low dose regions of nearby healthy tissues and structures. Dynamic photon painting (DPP) further increases dose falloff rate by treating a target by moving a beam source along a dynamic trajectory, where the speed, direction and even dose rate of the beam source change constantly during irradiation. DPP creates dose gradient that rivals proton Bragg Peak and outperforms Gamma Knife® radiosurgery.

Claims (25)

1. A computer system method of photon-based irradiation, the method comprising the steps of:

identifying a target;

convolving a first plurality of individual photon beams of radiation along preset three-dimensional trajectories to obtain one or more convolved beams;

determining a plurality of kernels, wherein each of the one or more convolved beams includes a kernel;

optimizing the plurality of kernels to obtain a dose kernel;

calculating a dynamic trajectory of the dose kernel to irradiate the target;

de-convolving the dose kernel along the dynamic trajectory into a second plurality of individual photon beams of radiation;

moving a photon beam source along the dynamic trajectory; and

applying to the target one or more individual photon beams of radiation of the second plurality to irradiate the target and increase dose falloff rate.

2. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein the photon beam source includes beam profiles and cross sections that can change or be any predetermined shape.

3. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein at least one selected from the group of speed, direction and dose rate of the photon beam source change constantly during said applying step.

4. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein a speed of said photon beam source dynamically varies during said applying step.

5. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein a direction of said photon beam source dynamically varies during said applying step.

6. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein a dose rate of the photon beam source dynamically varies during said applying step.

7. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein the dynamic trajectory is a helical trajectory.

8. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein the dynamic trajectory is a predetermined trajectory.

9. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein the dynamic trajectory is dynamically adjusted.

10. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 7 , wherein the helical trajectory is between a first latitude angle φ 1 and a second latitude angle φ 2 .

11. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 10 , wherein φ 1 =1° and φ 2 =40°.

12. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 10 , wherein φ 1 =1° and φ 2 =50°.

13. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 10 , wherein φ 1 =1° and φ 2 =65°.

14. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein the dynamic trajectory has a longitudinal angular range of 360°.

15. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein the dynamic trajectory has a longitudinal angular range from θ 1 to θ 2 .

16. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein a photon beam source to an axis distance is a predetermined distance.

17. The computer system method of photon-based irradiation of claim 1 , wherein a photon beam source to an axis distance varies during said irradiation step.
