Abstract

The present invention is directed to a welding-type power source that includes a power source housing and an engine arranged in the power source housing to supply electrical power. An energy storage device is included that is in rechargeable association with the internal combustion engine and arranged to provide welding-type power for at least a given period.

Claims (40)

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power conversion circuitry includes first circuitry coupled to the generator for converting the output power from the generator to power appropriate for the welding operation, and second circuitry coupled to the energy storage device for converting the output power from the energy storage device to power appropriate for the welding operation.

3. The system of claim 1 , comprising power transmission circuitry configured to permit the generator and the energy storage device to simultaneously provide power for the welding operation.

4. The system of claim 1 , comprising detection circuitry configured to detect output of the energy storage device and to control operation of the engine based upon the energy storage device output.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the energy storage device comprises a battery.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein both the power conditioning and charging circuitry and the power conversion circuitry together provide the power appropriate for the welding operation during a period of operation.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein a connection of the power conditioning and charging circuitry and the welding power output comprises a switch.

8. The system of claim 3 , wherein the circuitry includes a switch for selectively interrupting provision of output power from the generator to the welding operation.

9. The system of claim 4 , wherein the detection circuitry is configured to start the engine based upon the energy storage device output.

10. A system for providing power to a welding operation, comprising:

an internal combustion engine coupled to a generator for producing electrical power;

a battery coupled to the generator for receiving power from the generator for charging the battery;

power conditioning and battery charging circuitry continuously coupled to the generator and to the battery and configured to control charging of the battery;

power conversion circuitry coupled to the battery and configured to convert output power from the battery to power appropriate for a welding operation applied to a welding output; and

power transmission circuitry coupled to the generator and to the welding output in parallel to the battery to permit power from the generator to be applied to the welding output;

wherein the power conditioning and battery charging circuitry is coupled to a welding power output in parallel with the battery and the power conversion circuitry, and both the power conditioning and battery charging circuitry and the power conversion circuitry can provide the power appropriate for the welding operation.

11. The system of claim 10 , comprising circuitry coupled to the generator for converting the output power from the battery to power appropriate for the welding operation.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the power transmission circuitry is configured to permit the generator and the battery to simultaneously provide power for the welding operation.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the power transmission circuitry includes a switch for selectively interrupting provision of output power from the generator to the welding operation.

14. The system of claim 10 , comprising detection circuitry configured to detect output of the battery and to control operation of the engine based upon the battery output.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the detection circuitry is configured to start the engine based upon the battery output.

16. A system for providing power to a welding operation, comprising:

an internal combustion engine coupled to a generator for producing electrical power;

a battery coupled to the generator for receiving power from the generator for charging the battery;

power conditioning and battery charging circuitry continuously coupled to the generator and to the battery and configured to control charging of the battery;

power conversion circuitry coupled to the battery and configured to convert output power from the battery to power appropriate for a welding operation applied to a welding output; and
