Abstract

The methods and systems described herein are directed to providing, to virtual machines, access to data associated with a connection to a wireless local area network, in a computing device executing a hypervisor hosting a first virtual machine and a second virtual machine. A first driver executed by a first virtual machine of the first physical computing device establishes a network connection to a second physical computing device, via a wireless local area network interface of the first physical computing device. The first driver receives from a second driver executed by a second virtual machine of the first physical computing device, a request for a characteristic of the network connection. The first driver provides, responsive to the request, data comprising the requested characteristic to the second driver.

communicating, by the second driver with the second physical computing device via the network connection established by the first driver;

disabling access by the second driver to the wireless local area network interface;

enabling access by the first driver to the wireless local area network interface; and

maintaining, by the first driver, the network connection established by the first driver.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein establishing the network connection to the second physical computing device further comprising:

enabling access by the first driver to the wireless local area network interface; and

disabling access by the second driver to the wireless local area network interface.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising presenting the received characteristic to the user via a display of the first physical computing device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the data to the second driver comprises providing an identification of a signal strength of the established connection.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

disabling access by the first driver to the wireless local area network interface;

enabling access by the second driver to the wireless local area network interface; and

establishing, by the second driver, a second network connection to a third physical computing device via the wireless local area network interface of the first physical computing device.

6. In a computing device executing a hypervisor hosting a first virtual machine and a second virtual machine, a system for providing, to the virtual machines, access to data associated with a connection to a wireless local area network, comprising:

a first physical computing device, comprising wireless local area network interface and a processor executing a first virtual machine and a second virtual machine;

a second physical computing device;

a first driver executed by the first virtual machine;

a second driver executed by the second virtual machine;

wherein the first driver is configured to:

establish a network connection to the second physical computing device, via the wireless local area network interface of the first physical computing device,

receive, from the second driver, a request for a characteristic of the network connection to be presented to a user of the second virtual machine while access to the wireless local area network interface and access to data associated with the network connection is allocated to the first driver, the characteristic comprising a signal strength characteristic and an identification of the wireless local area network;

provide, responsive to the request, data comprising the requested characteristic to the second driver while access to the wireless local area network interface and access to data associated with the network connection is allocated to the first driver; and

a hypervisor of the first physical computing device, the hypervisor configured to:

disable access by the first driver to the wireless local area network interface,

enable access by the second driver to the wireless local area network interface,

communicate with the second physical computing device via the network connection established by the first driver,

disable access by the second driver to the wireless local area network interface, and

enable access by the first driver to the wireless local area network interface;

wherein the first driver is further configured to maintain the network connection established by the first driver.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first driver is configured to establish the network connection to the second physical computing device, comprising enabling access by the first driver to the wireless local area network interface, and disabling access by the second driver to the wireless local area network interface.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the second driver is further configured to present the received characteristic to the user via a display of the first physical computing device.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first driver is further configured to provide to the second driver an identification of a signal strength of the established connection.

10. The system of claim 6 , further comprising a third physical computing device, and wherein the hypervisor is further configured to disable access by the first driver to the wireless local area network interface and enable access by the second driver to the wireless local area network interface; and

the second driver is further configured to establish a second network connection to the third physical computing device via the wireless local area network interface of the first physical computing device.

11. In a computing device executing a hypervisor hosting a first virtual machine and a second virtual machine, a method for providing, to the virtual machines, access to data associated with a connection to a wireless local area network, comprising:
