Abstract

A bone-anchored surgical mesh has slot-like anchoring members that allow for the variable placement of screws and other bone fasteners. This permits the surgeon discretion in the placement of bone fasteners used to attach the mesh to the patient's bone. The elongate openings of the anchoring members allow for a sliding motion between the bone fasteners and the anchoring members, and facilitates positioning and articulation of the mesh. The anchoring members may include bushings to aid the sliding motion of the anchoring member on the bone fastener. In one embodiment, the mesh consists of shorter modular strips that overlap each other such that a single bone fastener is passed through two overlapping anchoring members to lock the two modular mesh strips together. Additional modular mesh strips can be added on at either end, as desired, to provide the desired length of dural coverage.

Claims (17)

1. A device configured to be anchored to a bone, comprising a surgical mesh configured to be contoured onto a bone structure, having

a longitudinal axis, lateral edges in opposition to one another and parallel with the longitudinal axis,

a plurality of anchoring members disposed along the lateral edges, each anchoring member having at least one elongated, slotted opening surrounded by a periphery, the periphery having sidewalls parallel to the longitudinal axis, and

at least one bone fastener received in the at least one elongated, slotted opening,

wherein the at least one elongated, slotted opening of the anchoring members is configured to slidably connect with at least one bone fastener for permitting sliding motion of the anchoring members upon the at least one fastener in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis and relative to surrounding bone when the device is secured to bone and

wherein the surgical mesh is a mesh that is deformable and pliable but is also resistive against distraction forces.

2. The bone anchored device of claim 1 , wherein the surgical mesh is fenestrated and contoured to resemble the anatomic shaped of a human spinal canal.

3. The bone anchored device of claim 2 , wherein peripheries of the anchoring members are recessed.

4. A method of performing a spinal operation comprising:

providing a bone anchored surgical mesh covering having a longitudinal axis, lateral edges in opposition to one another and parallel with the longitudinal axis including elongated slot-like anchoring members having at least one elongated, slotted opening surrounded by a periphery, the periphery having sidewalls parallel to the longitudinal axis, the elongated slotted anchoring members disposed along the lateral edges and configured to slidably connect to a plurality of bone fasteners;

shaping the surgical mesh to substantially resemble the anatomic contour of the spinal canal;

connecting the anchoring members with at least one of the remaining posterior elements of the spine using the plurality of bone fasteners passed through the anchoring members to permit sliding motion of the anchoring members in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis and relative to the spine; and

covering the surgical mesh with a bone growth promoter,

wherein the surgical mesh is a mesh that is deformable and pliable but is also resistive against distraction forces.

5. The method of performing a spinal operation of claim 4 , wherein the bone growth promoter is a bone graft.

6. The method of performing a spinal operation of claim 4 , wherein the bone growth promoter is a bone morphogenic protein.

7. The method of performing a spinal operation of claim 4 , wherein the anchoring members are slidably connected with the posterior elements.
