Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a fiber optic network architecture that uses outside plant fan-out devices to distribute optical signals between fiber distribution hubs and multi-service terminals. The network architecture can also include collector boxes positioned at selected locations of the network architecture. Additionally, patching systems can be used in facilitating upgrading the capacity of the fiber optic network.

Claims (23)

1. An outside plant fan-out device comprising:

a main cable portion extending from a single first hardened multi-fiber optic connector to a fan-out structure, the single first hardened multi-fiber optic connector including a single multi-fiber ferrule, the main cable portion including a plurality of optical fibers surrounded by a jacket;

a first fan-out cable portion extending outwardly from the fan-out structure to a second hardened multi-fiber optic connector, the first fan-out cable portion including a plurality of the optical fibers of the main cable portion, the second hardened multi-fiber optic connector including a single multi-fiber ferrule that receives the plurality of the optical fibers of the first fan-out cable portion, the first fan-out cable portion including fewer optical fibers than the main cable portion, the single multi-fiber ferrule of the second hardened multi-fiber optic connector receiving fewer optical fibers than the single multi-fiber ferrule of the first hardened multi-fiber optic connector; and

a second fan-out cable portion extending outwardly from the fan-out structure to a third hardened multi-fiber optic connector, the second fan-out cable portion including a plurality of the optical fibers of the main cable portion, the third hardened multi-fiber optic connector including a single multi-fiber ferrule that receives the plurality of the optical fibers of the second fan-out cable portion, the second fan-out cable portion including fewer optical fibers than the main cable portion, the single multi-fiber ferrule of the third hardened multi-fiber optic connector receiving fewer optical fibers than the single multi-fiber ferrule of the first hardened multi-fiber optic connector.

2. The outside plant fan-out device of claim 1 , further comprising a third fan-out cable portion extending outwardly from the fan-out structure to a fourth hardened multi-fiber optic connector, the third fan-out cable portion including a plurality of optical fibers, the third fan-out cable portion including fewer optical fibers than the main cable portion.

3. The outside plant fan-out device of claim 2 , wherein the main cable portion includes 12 fibers, and wherein the first, second and third fan-out cable portions each include 4 optical fibers.

4. The outside plant fan-out device of claim 1 , wherein the main cable portion includes 12 fibers, and wherein the first and second fan-out cable portions each include 6 optical fibers.

5. The outside plant fan-out device of claim 1 , wherein the main cable portion includes 12 fibers, and wherein the first and second fan-out cable portions respectively include 8 and 4 optical fibers.

6. The outside fan-out device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second fan-out cable portions have different lengths.

7. The outside fan-out device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second fan-out cable portions each include a tensile reinforcing member and a jacket that covers the optical fiber and the tensile reinforcing member, and wherein one of the one tensile reinforcing members is anchored to the fan-out structure and the second hardened multi-fiber optical connector and another of the tensile reinforcing members is anchored to the fan-out structure and the third hardened multi-fiber optical connector.

8. The outside fan-out device of claim 7 , wherein the first and second fan-out cable portions each have an elongate transverse cross-sectional shape.

9. The outside fan-out device of claim 8 , wherein the first and second fan-out cable portions each have two tensile reinforcing members, and wherein the optical fibers are positioned between the tensile reinforcing members in each of the first and second fan-out cable portions.

10. The outside fan-out device of claim 1 , wherein the first hardened multi-fiber connector is provided at a first end of the outside fan-out device, and wherein the first hardened multi-fiber connector is the only connector at the first end of the outside fan-out device.

11. An outside plant fan-out device comprising:

a cable arrangement having first end and a second end, the cable arrangement including a jacket surrounding a plurality of optical fibers;

at least one hardened multi-fiber connector mounted at the first end of the cable arrangement to terminate at least some of the optical fibers of the cable arrangement;

a plurality of hardened multi-fiber connectors mounted at the second end of the cable arrangement, each of the hardened multi-fiber connectors terminating at least some of the optical fibers of the cable arrangement, wherein the second end of the cable arrangement includes more hardened multi-fiber connectors than the first end.

12. An outside plant fan-out device comprising:

a main cable portion including a jacket surrounding optical fibers;

fan-out blocks at opposite first and second ends of the main cable portion;

a plurality of fan-out cable portions extending outwardly from each of the first and second fan-out blocks, each of the fan-out cable portions having a respective jacket surrounding a plurality of the optical fibers of the main cable portion, and each of the fan-out cable portions being terminated by a hardened multi-fiber fiber optic connector.

13. The outside plant fan-out device of claim 12 , wherein the fan-out cable portions at the first end of the main cable portion have different lengths from one another.

14. The outside plant fan-out device of claim 12 , wherein the fan-out cable portions at the second end of the main cable portion have different lengths from one another.
