Abstract

Surgical implants of the present disclosed include a film comprising a first therapeutic agent and a mesh comprising a second therapeutic agent. The surgical implant includes a film in direct contact with a mesh. The first therapeutic agent may be released at a first rate and the second therapeutic agent may be released at a second rate.

Claims (15)

1. A surgical implant comprising:

a film comprising carboxymethylcellulose, glycerol and a first therapeutic agent and covering at least a portion of a mesh comprising a second therapeutic agent, wherein the carboxymethylcellulose and the glycerol are combined at a 5:1 ratio, the first therapeutic agent and the second therapeutic agent releasable in situ at different rates.

2. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second therapeutic agent is selected from the group consisting of anti-inflammatory agents, analgesic agents, anesthetic agents, antibiotic agents, angiogenic agents, antispasmodic agents, growth factors, proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, polymer drugs, and combinations thereof.

3. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein the first therapeutic agent is the same as the second therapeutic agent.

4. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein the first therapeutic agent is different than the second therapeutic agent.

5. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first or the second therapeutic agent is selected from the group consisting of bupivicaine hydrochloride, bupivicaine, and capsaicin.

6. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein the first therapeutic agent is released in situ from about less than 24 hours after implantation and the second therapeutic agent is released in situ from about more than 24 hours after implantation.

7. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein the first therapeutic agent is released in situ from about less than one hour after implantation.

8. The surgical implant according to claim 7 , wherein the second therapeutic agent is released in situ from about 24 hours to about fourteen days.

9. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein the first therapeutic agent is bupivicaine hydrochloride and the second therapeutic agent is a bupivicaine free base.

10. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein the mesh is at least partially embedded within the film.

11. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein the film is adjacent to a first surface of the mesh.

12. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein the mesh comprises a coating which comprises the second therapeutic agent.

13. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein the mesh comprises at least one degradable filament which comprises the second therapeutic agent.

14. The surgical implant according to claim 1 , wherein the film releases the first therapeutic agent to the tissue in less than 1 hour; and the mesh releases the second therapeutic agent to the tissue in greater than 24 hours after implantation.
