Abstract

Some demonstrative embodiments include devices, systems and/or methods of beam selection for beamformed communication. For example, an apparatus may include a controller to control a plurality of antenna subarrays to form a plurality of directional beams for communicating a beamformed diversity wireless transmission over a plurality of selected directional links, which are selected based on at least one predefined selection metric.

a controller to control a plurality of antenna subarrays of a first wireless communication device to form a plurality of directional beams to communicate a beamformed diversity wireless transmission between said first wireless communication device and a second wireless communication device over a plurality of selected directional links, which are selected based on at least one predefined selection metric, said controller is to communicate a channel measurement feedback element including a plurality of sector identifiers, each sector identifier identifying an antenna subarray and a sector corresponding to the antenna subarray, the channel measurement feedback element including a plurality of measurements corresponding to said plurality of sector identifiers.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said selection metric comprises a channel capacity metric.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said selection metric is based on differences in angles of arrival, differences in angles of departure, or a combination thereof.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said controller is to determine the selection metric with respect to a directional link based on a channel matrix corresponding to the link and a number of transmit antenna subarrays.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said controller is to determine the selection metric with respect to a directional link based on a combination of a plurality of Signal-to-Interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) values corresponding to a plurality of received streams of said directional link.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein said controller is to determine an SINR value of said SINR values based on an effective channel after performing Space-Block-Code processing.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said channel measurement feedback element comprises a beam refinement element, and wherein said sector identifier is included in a field of said beam refinement element.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein said sector identifier comprises a three-bit identifier.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said sector identifier comprises a sector number representing the sector corresponding to the antenna subarray.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said sector number comprises an 8-bit number.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of said plurality of selected directional links is formed by a pair of a transmit (Tx) sector and a Receive (Rx) sector.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of selected directional links comprise a plurality of beamformed links between said antenna subarrays and one or more antenna subarrays of said second wireless communication device.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said beamformed diversity wireless transmission comprises a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) wireless transmission over said plurality of selected directional links.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said beamformed diversity wireless transmission comprises a transmission over a millimeter wave (mmWave) channel, or a directional multi-gigabit (DMG) channel.

15. A system comprising:

at least one first wireless communication device comprising:

one or more antenna arrays controllable as a plurality of antenna subarrays;

a plurality of Radio Frequency (RF) chains coupled to said plurality of antenna subarrays; and

a controller to control said plurality of antenna subarrays to form a plurality of directional beams to communicate a wireless beamformed transmission between said first wireless communication device and a second wireless communication device,
