Abstract

A loading unit for use with a surgical stapling apparatus is provided and includes a tool assembly having a cartridge assembly and an anvil assembly that are movable in relation to one another; a surgical buttress releasably secured to a tissue contacting surface of the anvil assembly and/or the cartridge assembly, wherein each surgical buttress is secured to the anvil assembly and/or the cartridge assembly by at least one anchor; a release assembly associated with the anvil assembly and/or the cartridge assembly; and a drive assembly slidably translatable through the tool assembly between proximal and distal positions, wherein the drive assembly actuates the release assembly to thereby release the anchor to free the surgical buttress from the anvil assembly and/or the cartridge assembly.

Claims (28)

1. A surgical instrument comprising:

a cartridge assembly defining a longitudinal axis and a tissue contacting surface, the cartridge assembly including a cartridge configured to have a plurality of surgical fasteners disposed therein;

an anvil assembly defining a longitudinal axis and a tissue contacting surface and disposed in juxtaposed relation to the cartridge assembly; and

a surgical buttress overlying the tissue contacting surface of one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly,

wherein at least one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly defines a recess disposed at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis thereof, the recess configured to receive and secure a first suture therein to releasably secure the surgical buttress to the tissue contacting surface of one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly.

The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the recess has a uniform width central portion extending between a first end and a second end, an expanding mouth portion disposed at the first end of the uniform width central portion, and a rounded head portion disposed at the second end of the uniform width central portion.

The surgical instrument according to claim 2 , wherein the uniform width central portion includes a plurality of barbs, such that upon insertion of the first suture into the recess, the barbs engage the first suture so that the first suture is restricted from motion away from the rounded head portion.

4. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , further comprising a release assembly associated with one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly configured to move the first suture out of the recess when actuated.

5. The surgical instrument according to claim 4 , further comprising a drive assembly translatable through one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly from a proximal position to a distal position.

6. The surgical instrument according to claim 5 , wherein the drive assembly actuates the release assembly to thereby release the first suture from the recess and to free the surgical buttress from one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly.

7. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the recess is one of a pair of opposed recesses, each of the pair of opposed recesses being disposed at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly.

8. The surgical instrument according to claim 7 , wherein the pair of opposed recesses is defined in a proximal portion of one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly.

The surgical instrument according to claim 8 , wherein one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly defines another pair of opposed recesses at a distal end thereof for receipt of a second suture, the another pair of opposed recesses being disposed at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly.

10. A surgical instrument comprising:

a cartridge assembly defining as longitudinal axis and a tissue contacting surface, the cartridge assembly including a cartridge configured to have a plurality of surgical fasteners disposed therein;

an anvil assembly defining a longitudinal axis and a tissue contacting surface and disposed in juxtaposed relation to the cartridge assembly, the anvil assembly being movable in relation to the cartridge assembly; and

a surgical buttress overlying the tissue contacting surface of one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly,

wherein one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly defines a recess having a plurality of barbs disposed therein, the recess configured to receive and secure a first suture therein to releasably secure the surgical buttress to the tissue contacting surface of one of the cartridge assembly and the assembly.

The surgical instrument according to claim 10 , wherein the recess has a uniform width central portion extending between a first end and a second end, an expanding mouth portion disposed at the first end of the uniform width central portion, and an enlarged head portion disposed at the second end of the uniform width central portion.

The surgical instrument according to claim 11 , wherein the plurality of barbs are disposed in the uniform width central portion, such that upon insertion of the first suture into the recess, the plurality of barbs engage the first suture so that the first suture is restricted from motion away from the enlarged head portion.

13. The surgical instrument according to claim 10 , wherein the recess is disposed at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly.

14. The surgical instrument according to claim 10 , further composing a release assembly associated with one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly configured to move the first suture out of the recess when actuated.

15. The surgical instrument according to claim 14 , further comprising a drive assembly translatable through one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly from a proximal position to a distal position.

16. The surgical instrument according to claim 15 , wherein the drive assembly actuates the release assembly to thereby release the first suture from the recess and to free the surgical buttress from one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly.

17. The surgical instrument according to claim 10 , wherein the recess is one of a pair of opposed recesses, each of the pair of opposed recesses having a plurality of barbs disposed therein.

18. The surgical instrument according to claim 17 , wherein the pair of opposed recesses is defined in a proximal portion of one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly.

19. The surgical instrument according to claim 18 , wherein one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly defines another pair of opposed recesses at a distal end thereof for receipt of a second suture, the another pair of opposed recesses having a plurality of barbs disposed therein.

20. A surgical instrument as recited in claim 19 , wherein the another pair of opposed recesses is disposed at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of one of the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly.
