Abstract

Techniques and systems for distracting a spinal disc space and supporting adjacent vertebrae are provided. Trial instruments are insertable into the disc space to determine a desired disc space height and to select a corresponding implant. Implants can be also be self-distracting and the implant providing the desired disc space height can be implanted in the spinal disc space.

Claims (24)

1. A kit, comprising:

at least three implants, each of said at least three implants adapted for insertion in a collapsed disc space between an upper vertebra and a lower vertebra to provide a differing restored disc space height, a selected one of said at least three implants implantable in the collapsed disc space to post-operatively maintain a desired disc space height corresponding to the restored disc space height provided by the selected implant, each of the implants comprising a first height and a second height, said first height of each of said at least three implants being the same and said second height being different for each of said at least three implants; wherein each of said implants including a leading end nose portion comprising the first height, each of said at least three implants comprising the second height between an upper surface and a lower surface thereof, the second height corresponding to the restored disc space height.

2. The kit of claim 1 , wherein each of said at least two three implants comprises:

a body including a distal leading end portion, a proximal end, an upper surface orientable toward an endplate of the upper vertebra and a lower surface orientable toward an endplate of the lower vertebra, said body including the second height between said upper and lower surfaces corresponding to the restored disc space height.

3. The kit of claim 2 , wherein said upper surface and said lower surface of each of said at least three implants are convex.

4. The kit of claim 2 , further comprising:

at least two trial bodies, each of said at least two trial bodies adapted for insertion in a collapsed disc space between an upper vertebra and a lower vertebra to provide a differing restored disc space height, said selected one of said at least two implants corresponding in size and shape to said trial body providing the restored disc space height corresponding to the desired disc space height.

5. The kit of claim 4 , wherein said at least three implants are comprised of bone material.

6. The kit of claim 1 , further comprising at least one insertion instrument releasably attachable to each of said at least three implants.

7. The kit of claim 1 , wherein:

said restored disc space height of each of said at least three implants is defined between an upper surface and a lower surface thereof; and

each of said at least three implants includes an upper transition surface extending from said leading end nose portion thereof to said upper surface and a lower transition surface extending from said leading end nose portion thereof to said lower surface.

8. The kit of claim 1 , wherein each of said at least three implants is implantable in the collapsed disc space to post-operatively maintain the collapsed disc space at the restored disc space height provided thereby.

9. The kit of claim 1 , wherein said first height is in the range from about 3 millimeters to about 4 millimeters and said differing second heights are included in the range from about 6 millimeters to about 15 millimeters.

10. The kit of claim 1 , wherein said first height is in the range from about 3 millimeters to about 4 millimeters and said differing second heights are included in the range from about 12 millimeters to about 15 millimeters.

11. The kit of claim 2 , wherein said distal leading end portion of said body of said at least three implants includes a nose portion that is rounded between the upper surface and the lower surface of said body of said at least three implants.

12. The kit of claim 11 , wherein said body of said at least three implants includes an upper transition surface and a lower transition surface along said distal leading end portion that tapers from said upper surface and said lower surface to said rounded nose portion thereof.

13. The kit of claim 12 , wherein said upper and lower transition surfaces are planar.

14. The kit of claim 11 , wherein said nose portion of said body of said at least three implants is convexly curved in the direction between opposite lateral sidewalls of said body of said at least three implants.

15. The kit of claim 4 , wherein said at least two trial bodies include a leading end portion and an upper surface and an opposite lower surface, said leading end portion includes a convexly curved nose extending between said upper and lower surfaces, wherein said upper and lower surfaces are convexly curved along said at least two trial bodies.

16. The kit of claim 15 , wherein said leading end nose portion of said at least two implants include a convexly curved nose extending between said upper and lower surfaces.

17. The kit of claim 15 , wherein said nose of said at least two trial bodies is convexly rounded between opposite lateral surfaces of said trial body, said lateral surfaces extending parallel to one another and between said upper and lower surfaces.

18. The kit of claim 1 , wherein said leading end nose portion of said at least three implants is convexly curved.

19. The kit of claim 2 , wherein the upper and lower surfaces comprise grooves.
