Abstract

A radiation control system and method are provided in which radiation delivered to a patient and/or the operator of the equipment is minimized. The radiation control system may be used in a large variety of applications including applications in which radiation source is used to inspect an object, such as, for example, medical imaging, diagnosis and therapy, in manufacturing operation using radiation, in airports scanning systems, in different security setups, and in nuclear reactors automation and process control. The radiation control system and method may also be used with 3D imaging.

Claims (13)

1. A method for reducing radiation, the method comprising the steps of:

generating, using a radiation source, a radiation beam that is directable towards a patient or object;

generating, using a radiation controller connected to the radiation source, a collimator control signal; and

filtering radiation that is outside of a focus of interest to reduce a radiation dose from the radiation source for radiation that is outside of the focus of interest using the collimator connected to the radiation controller based on the collimator control signal, wherein the collimator is one of a moving mechanical collimator and a region of interest filter that exposes an area of maximal attention to the beam and reduces exposure of other areas to the beam.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the collimator is adapted to deliver a predetermined radiation dose to each of a plurality of segments of a field of view.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of segments of the field of view comprises the area of maximal attention and other areas.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the radiation source further comprises a first radiation source adapted to deliver a radiation beam to the area of maximal attention and a second radiation source adapted to deliver an electromagnetic beam to the other areas through the collimator.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the radiation source comprises an anode with one or more targets to adjust the radiation dose.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the anode comprises a movable anode.

7. The method of claim 3 , wherein the radiation source comprises a matrix of radiation field emitters.

8. The method of claim 3 , wherein the radiation source comprises a square matrix of multiple field emission x-ray tubes and each field emission x-ray tube is adapted to direct a radiation dose towards a particular area.

9. The method of claim 4 , wherein the second radiation source is adapted to deliver radiation at a reduced intensity.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein reduced exposure of the other areas to the beam comprises not exposing the other areas to the beam.
