Abstract

Crosslinked polymeric organic porous particles have a crosslinked organic solid phase and discrete pores dispersed within the crosslinked organic solid phase, which discrete pores are isolated from each other. The crosslinked organic porous particles are prepared using one or more water-in-oil emulsions containing a polyfunctional reactive compound and a reagent that causes crosslinking, and can be incorporated into or applied to various articles for many purposes. If marker materials are incorporated into the crosslinked organic porous particles, these marker materials can be detected using appropriate instruments.

Claims (22)

1. An article that comprises one or more crosslinked organic porous particles wherein each crosslinked organic porous particle comprises a crosslinked organic polymer that provides a crosslinked organic solid phase including an external particle surface and first and second discrete pores that are isolated from each other and dispersed within the crosslinked organic solid phase, the first and second discrete pores having an average size greater than or equal to 0.1 μm, wherein the mode particle size of the crosslinked organic porous particles is at least 3 μm and up to and including 100 μm,

wherein the crosslinked organic porous particles further comprise a first marker material that is present within only the volume of the first discrete pores, and the volume of the second discrete pores is at least partially occupied by a second marker material, which first and second marker materials are detectably different.

2. The article of claim 1 that is a fabric, label, film, fiber, paper sheet or plastic film, paperstock, packaging component, or polymer, ceramic, or glass article.

3. The article of claim 1 comprising a coating composition comprising the one or more crosslinked organic porous particles.

4. The article of claim 3 , wherein the coating composition comprising the one or more crosslinked organic porous particles is a cosmetic formulation.

The article of claim 1 wherein the first and second discrete pores comprise pore stabilizing hydrocolloids that are the same or different and are independently selected from the group consisting of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), a gelatin or gelatin derivative, a protein or protein derivative, a hydrophilic synthetic polymer, a water-soluble microgel, a polystyrene sulfonate, poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate), and a polyphosphate.

6. The article of claim 1 wherein the first and second discrete pores are independently at least 0.1 μm and up to and including 4 μm in average size.

7. The article of claim 1 wherein the one or more crosslinked organic porous particles have a mode particle size of at least 5 and up to and including 70 μm.

8. The article of claim 1 that is a drug delivery device.

9. The article of claim 1 that is a formed polymer or glass article that comprises the one or more crosslinked organic porous particles.

10. The article of claim 1 wherein the crosslinked organic polymer of the crosslinked organic porous particles is a chemically crosslinked thermoplastic resin.

11. The article of claim 1 wherein the crosslinked organic porous particles are insoluble in propyl acetate for 24 hours at room temperature.

12. The article of claim 1 wherein the crosslinked organic porous particles further comprise a radiation absorber in one or more of the discrete pores.

13. The article of claim 1 wherein the crosslinked organic porous particles recover at least 80% of their volume after being subjected to 200° C. and 1500 pounds pressure for 5 minutes.

The article of claim 1 wherein the first and second marker materials are selected from the group consisting of different colored pigments or dyes, different fluorescing materials, different radioisotopes, particles of different metal or metal-containing compounds having different magnetic moments, different luminescing compounds, and different bioactive materials.

15. The article of claim 1 wherein the crosslinked organic porous particles have external surfaces that comprise colloidal particles.

16. The article of claim 1 wherein the crosslinked organic porous particles have an aspect ratio of at least 0.4 and up to and including 0.95.

17. The article of claim 1 wherein the volume of at least one set of the first or second discrete pores contains two or more marker materials.

18. The article of claim 1 , wherein the first marker material is a reactive chemical and the second marker material is a different reactive chemical to be kept separate from the reactive material until reaction of the reactive chemical and different reactive chemical is needed.

19. The article of claim 1 , wherein the first marker material is a bioactive material and the second marker material is a different bioactive material.

20. The article of claim 1 , wherein the first marker material is a bioactive material and the second marker material is a metal oxide.

21. The article of claim 1 , wherein the first marker material is a bioactive material and the second marker material is a colorant.
