Abstract

A biorenewable thermoplastic, poly(dihydroferulic acid) (PHFA), is an effective polyethylene terephthalate (PET) mimic that is prepared by a step-growth condensation polymerization of acetyldihydroferulic acid. Other biorenewable thermoplastic copolymers, poly(dihydroferulic acid-co-ferulic acid) are effective mimics of polystyrene and other thermoplastics. The PHFA copolymers can be prepared by the copolymerization of acetyldihydroferulic acid with acetylferulic acid, which are monomers that can be synthesized from starting materials isolated from lignin, rice bran, or other biorenewable sources.

Claims (2)

1. A biorenewable thermoplastic copolymer consisting of poly(dihydroferulic acid-co-ferulic acid) wherein the poly(dihydroferulic acid-co-ferulic acid) has at least one acetoxy end-group and the percentage of ferulic acid units is 10 to 90 molar percent.

2. A method of preparing the poly(dihydroferulic acid-co-ferulic acid) of claim 1 comprising: providing acetyldihydroferulic acid and acetylferulic acid and in a and a catalyst, wherein the acetylferulic acid is present in range from 10 to 90 molar percent; and polymerizing the acetyldihydroferulic acid and acetylferulic acid to a poly(dihydroferulic acid-co-ferulic acid) with the liberation of acetic acid; and isolating a poly(dihydroferulic acid-co-ferulic acid) having at least one acetoxy end-group.
