Abstract

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for recycling magnetic material. One of the systems includes a system for harvesting a waste magnet from an end-of-life product, the system comprising a positioning mechanism that defines a recess to receive and locate the end-of-life product relative to the positioning mechanism, the end-of-life product including the waste magnet, a separating station to substantially separate a portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet from the remainder of the end-of-life product when the positioning mechanism moves the respective end-of-life product through the separating station, and a transport station that receives the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet from the positioning mechanism when the positioning mechanism moves the respective end-of-life product to the transport station.

Claims (52)

1. A system for harvesting a waste magnet from an end-of-life product, the system comprising:

a positioning mechanism that defines a recess to receive and locate the end-of-life product relative to the positioning mechanism, the end-of-life product including the waste magnet;

a base table, positioned below the positioning mechanism, to support the positioning mechanism and the end-of-life product, wherein the end-of-life product is directly supported from underneath;

a separating station to substantially separate a portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet from the remainder of the end-of-life product when the positioning mechanism moves the respective end-of-life product through the separating station; and

a transport station that receives the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet from the positioning mechanism when the positioning mechanism moves the respective end-of-life product to the transport station.

2. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

a loading station; and

a loading device that loads the end-of-life product onto the positioning mechanism at the loading station.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the loading device orients the end-of-life product on the positioning mechanism to position the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet for separation from the remainder of the end-of-life product at the separating station.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the loading device comprises a robot.

5. The system of claim 2 , wherein the loading device comprises a feeder.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transport station comprises:

a reclaim bin that receives the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet of at least some end-of-life products from the transport station.

7. The system of claim 6 , comprising:

an aperture in the base table at the transport station to allow the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet to fall into the reclaim bin.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transport station comprises:

a tool, separate from the separating station, to finish removing the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet from the remainder of the end-of-life product.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the tool comprises a deflection surface.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the tool comprises an abrasive cutter.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the transport station comprises:

a reclaim bin that receives, for each of at least some end-of-life products, the respective portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet when the tool finishes removing the respective portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet from the remainder of the respective end-of-life product.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the transport station comprises:

a conveyor that receives, for each of at least some end-of-life products, the respective portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet when the tool finishes removing the respective portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet from the remainder of the respective end-of-life product.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the transport station comprises:

a chute that receives, for each of at least some end-of-life products, the respective portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet when the tool finishes removing the respective portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet from the remainder of the respective end-of-life product.

14. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

a discard station that removes the remainder of the end-of-life product of at least some end of life products from the positioning mechanism.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the discard station comprises:

a discard bin.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the positioning mechanism rotates around a center axis to move the end-of-life product between the separating station and the transport station.

17. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

bearings located on the base table that support the positioning mechanism and reduce friction between the base table and the positioning mechanism.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the separating station comprises one of a plasma cutter, a water jet, a blade cutter, a band saw, or a shear.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the positioning mechanism comprises a turntable defining a plurality of recesses each of which receives one end-of-life product at a loading station.

20. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

a filtered vent to remove waste particles from the system.

21. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

an inertial separator to remove waste particles from the system.

22. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

a vent to exhaust pollutants from the system.

23. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

a heater that receives the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet from the transport station and heats the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet to a temperature above a Curie temperature of the magnetic material of the waste magnet.

24. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

a cooler that rapidly cools the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet to facilitate detachment of the magnetic material of the waste magnet from subassemblies in the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet.

25. The system of claim 24 , wherein the cooler rapidly cools the portion of the end-of-life product to 5° C.

26. The system of claim 24 , comprising:

a heater that receives the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet from the transport station and heats the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet to a temperature above a Curie temperature of the magnetic material of the waste magnet, wherein the cooler rapidly cools the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet to 5° C. after the heating of the portion of the end-of-life product containing the waste magnet to the temperature above the Curie temperature of the magnetic material.

27. The system of claim 1 wherein the waste magnet comprises a waste Nd—Fe—B sintered magnet.

28. The system of claim 1 , wherein a top surface of the base table is below all of a bottom surface of the positioning mechanism.

29. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

a discard station that removes the remainder of the end-of-life product of at least some end of life products from the transport station.
