Abstract

Methods, systems, and computer-readable media providing focal feedback and control in a three-dimensional display. Focal anchors are provided at different depths and used to determine at what depth the user is currently focusing. The focal anchors are also used to receive input from the user. By looking at a focal anchor, the use can cause the portion of content associated with the focal anchor to be displayed more prominently relative to content displayed at different depths. In one embodiment, predictive feedback is provided at a depth associated with one of the focal anchors.

Claims (42)

1. A method of providing multiple channels of information in three-dimensional space, the method comprising:

outputting a first content that comprises a first focal anchor for display in a first three-dimensional volume defined, in part, by a first depth range;

outputting a second content that comprises a visible object and a second focal anchor for display in a second three-dimensional volume defined, in part, by a second depth range that is between a person viewing the second content and the first content;

determining that the person is viewing the second content;

in response to the determination, adjusting a visibility of the first content or the second content to improve a visibility of the second content; and

determining that the person is viewing the first focal anchor and, in response, outputting a new second content that only comprises the second focal anchor.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the visible object is a help instruction for a primary content included in the first content.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first focal anchor is located in a first location within of the first content.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the second content includes a second focal anchor that is located in a second location within of the second content, the first location and the second location being greater than a threshold distance from each other.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein determining that the person is viewing the second content is accomplished by determining the person's gaze is directed to the second focal anchor.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first content is a primary display content and the second content is out-of-band information that annotates the primary display content.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the person is viewing the second content is accomplished by determining the person's focus is on the second volume by measuring the vergence of the person's eyes.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the person is viewing the second content is accomplished by determining the person's focus is on the second volume by measuring the accommodation of the person's eyes.

9. A computing system comprising:

a processor; and

computer storage memory having computer-executable instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the processor, implement a method for providing focal anchors in different depths of three-dimensional display space to draw a user to elements displayed at a desired depth, the method comprising:

outputting a first content that comprises a first focal anchor for display in a first three-dimensional volume defined, in part, by a first depth range;

outputting a second content that comprises a second focal anchor for display in a second three-dimensional volume defined, in part, by a second depth range that is between the user viewing the second content and the first depth range;

changing an appearance of the second focal anchor to draw the user's focus to the second depth range;

outputting updated second content with an annotation related to the first content; and

determining that the user's gaze has moved to the first focal anchor and, in response, outputting a new second content that only comprises the second focal anchor.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises:

determining that the user's gaze has moved onto the second focal anchor, and

upon said determining, adjusting the appearance of the first content or the second content to make the second content appear more prominent than the first content.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises wherein the second focal anchor is located on an edge of a display area.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first focal anchor and the second focal anchor are located on opposite sides of a display area.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein changing the appearance of the second focal anchor comprises causing the second focal anchor to flash.

14. A computing system comprising:

a processor; and

computer storage memory having computer-executable instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the processor, implement a method of providing multiple channels of information in three-dimensional space, the method comprising:

outputting a first content that comprises a first focal anchor for display in a first three-dimensional volume defined, in part, by a first depth range;

outputting a second content that comprises a visible object and a second focal anchor for display in a second three-dimensional volume defined, in part, by a second depth range that is between a person viewing the second content and the first content;

determining that the person is viewing the second content;

in response to the determination, adjusting a visibility of the first content or the second content to improve a visibility of the second content; and

determining that the person is viewing the first focal anchor and, in response, outputting a new second content that only comprises the second focal anchor.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the visible object IS a help instruction for a primary content included in the first content.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first focal anchor is located in a first location within of the first content.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the second content includes a second focal anchor that is located in a second location within of the second content, the first location and the second location being greater than a threshold distance from each other.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein determining that the person is viewing the second content is accomplished by determining the person's gaze is directed to the second focal anchor.

19. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first content is a primary display content and the second content is out-of-band information that annotates the primary display content.

20. The system of claim 14 , wherein determining that the person is viewing the second content is accomplished by determining the person's focus is on the second volume by measuring the vergence of the person's eyes.

21. The system of claim 14 , wherein determining that the person is viewing the second content is accomplished by determining the person's focus is on the second volume by measuring the accommodation of the person's eyes.
