Abstract

An electromechanical flywheel machine includes a flywheel mass and a motor-generator having a rotor rotatable about a stationery inner stator having stator windings.

Claims (84)

1. An electromechanical flywheel comprising:

a core assembly including a motor-generator stator;

a cylindrical motor-generator rotor surrounding the stator;

the stator

defining an axis of rotation,

having a field coil that encircles the axis of rotation, and

having an armature coil that does not encircle the axis of rotation;

a flywheel mass for operation in a vacuum, the flywheel mass

encircling the motor-generator rotor and

coupled to the motor-generator rotor for rotation with the motor-generator rotor;

an upstanding vacuum housing enclosing the motor-generator rotor and the flywheel mass;

first and second spaced apart suspension assemblies;

the first suspension assembly including a first electromagnetic bearing for applying centering and levitating forces to the motor-generator rotor;

the second suspension assembly including a second electromagnetic bearing for applying centering forces to the motor-generator rotor;

a cylindrical motor-generator rotor wall including plural stages with plural embedments in each stage and non-magnetic material abutting the embedments;

the embedments are laminated magnetic path part assemblies arranged to create a lattice with spaces between the embedments, the spaces being filled with the non-magnetic material; and,

each embedment traverses a staggered magnetic path between adjacent rings of the stator.

2. The flywheel assembly of claim 1 further comprising:

a hub in the form of a conical transition piece;

the hub located below the core assembly and interconnecting a rotating magnet platform at its center and the motor-generator rotor at its periphery;

the first suspension assembly opposing the rotating magnet platform;

mounted on the rotating magnet platform, a rotating permanent magnet and a rotating electromagnet portion of the first electromagnetic bearing; and,

mounted on a stationary magnet platform, a stationary permanent magnet and a stationary electromagnet portion of the first electromagnetic bearing.

3. An electromechanical flywheel comprising:

a core assembly including a motor-generator stator;

a cylindrical motor-generator rotor surrounding the stator;

the stator

defining an axis of rotation,

having a field coil that encircles the axis of rotation, and

having an armature coil that does not encircle the axis of rotation;

a flywheel mass for operation in a vacuum, the flywheel mass

encircling the motor-generator rotor and

coupled to the motor-generator rotor for rotation with the motor-generator rotor;

an upstanding vacuum housing enclosing the motor-generator rotor and the flywheel mass;

first and second spaced apart suspension assemblies;

the first suspension assembly including a first electromagnetic bearing for applying centering and levitating forces to the motor-generator rotor;

the second suspension assembly including a second electromagnetic bearing for applying centering forces to the motor-generator rotor;

a hub in the form of a conical transition piece coupled to the flywheel mass and a support pin;

the support pin having upper and lower ends, the upper end proximate the core assembly and the lower end proximate the first electromagnetic bearing;

the support pin ends are not contacted during a normal operation;

the support pin ends are contacted during a shutdown operation; and,

the support pin supports the hub when the support pin ends engage respective mechanical bearings.

4. The flywheel assembly of claim 3 further comprising:

a plurality of three or more stator rings, each ring encircling the axis of rotation and the plurality of rings having a slotted periphery;

the field coil located between a pair of rings; and,

a plurality of armature coils interengaged with slots of the stator rings.

5. The flywheel assembly of claim 4 further comprising:

a supply region and an exhaust region within the vacuum housing;

the supply region having a boundary defined at least in part by portions of the vacuum housing, a hub exterior surface, and a flywheel mass periphery;

the exhaust region having a boundary defined at least in part by portions of the vacuum housing and the core assembly; and,

a first drag pump interposed between a flywheel mass surface and the vacuum housing.

6. The flywheel assembly of claim 5 further comprising:

a second drag pump interposed between a stator ring and the motor-generator rotor.

7. The flywheel assembly of claim 5 further comprising:

a second drag pump operable to establish a flow in a direction substantially perpendicular to a direction of flow established by the first drag pump.

8. An electromechanical flywheel comprising:

an upstanding vacuum housing;

a core assembly and a shaft-less rotating assembly for rotating in a vacuum of the vacuum housing;

the rotating assembly including a cylindrical motor-generator rotor and a cylindrical flywheel mass for rotation with the motor-generator rotor;

the core assembly including a motor-generator stator that defines a motor-generator rotor rotation axis;

the stator having a field coil that encircles the motor-generator rotor rotation axis and an armature coil that does not encircle the motor-generator rotor rotation axis;

the motor-generator rotor interposed between the stator and the flywheel mass;

a motor-generator rotor hub and a support pin located between a free end of the core assembly and the housing;

the core assembly supported by a single support in the form of a stator support located above the hub, arranged coaxially with the motor-generator rotor rotation axis, and extending from a top of the housing;

an electromagnetic bearing for providing motor-generator rotor levitating forces; and,

the motor-generator rotor support pin for supporting the motor-generator rotor when the motor-generator rotor is not levitated.

9. The electromechanical flywheel of claim 8 further comprising:

upper and lower mechanical bearings located above and below the support pin; and,

the upper mechanical bearing mounted on a plate moveable by an electromagnetic actuator;

wherein the mechanical bearings are selectively engaged by the support pin by operation of the electromagnetic actuator.

10. The electromechanical flywheel of claim 8 further comprising:

support pin upper and lower mechanical bearings;

a first support pin permanent magnet located adjacent to and between the electromagnetic bearing and the lower mechanical bearing;

the electromagnetic bearing including an angled face for providing both motor-generator rotor centering forces and the motor-generator rotor levitating forces;

an electromagnetic bearing rotor attached to the support pin for levitating the rotor;

a second support pin permanent magnet attached to the support pin for levitating the motor-generator rotor;

in a normal flywheel operation, the support pin bearings are not engaged by the support pin; and,

in a shutdown flywheel operation, the support pin bearings engaged by the support pin.

11. The electromechanical flywheel of claim 8 further comprising (i) a stationary drag pump labyrinth located proximate an annular flywheel mass end and (ii) a movable drag pump rotor which is the annular flywheel mass end.

12. The electromechanical flywheel of claim 11 wherein the housing includes nested inner and outer closed vessels, the inner vessel being a vacuum barrier and the outer vessel being a containment.

13. The electromechanical flywheel of claim 12 further comprising:

a second electromagnetic bearing having an electromagnetic bearing stator inside an electromagnetic bearing rotor;

the electromagnetic bearing rotor integral with the motor-generator rotor; and,

a magnetic gap between the electromagnetic bearing rotor and stator located proximate the flywheel mass.
