Abstract

The performance of a mammal, manifested as a reduced oxygen uptake (VO 2 ) during physical exercise, can be enhanced by administering to said mammal a non-toxic amount of nitrate and/or nitrite. Liquid, semi-solid and solid snack and food products and nutritional supplements, such as sport drinks are made available.

Claims (54)

1. A method for non-therapeutically reducing oxygen consumption (VO 2 ) of a mammal and enhancing physical performance of the mammal during physical exercise, the method comprising:

orally administering inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite to said mammal up to three days prior to the mammal performing physical exercise and in a dose of about 0.01-10 mmol inorganic nitrate/kg bodyweight/day and/or of about 0.001-1 mmol inorganic nitrite/kg bodyweight/day; wherein administration of said inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite will result in reduced oxygen consumption (VO 2 ) in and enhanced physical performance of said mammal during the physical exercise as compared with the physical performance of said mammal during the physical exercise in the absence of administration of the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein inorganic nitrate and nitrite are administered in a dose ratio interval of about 5:1 to about 100:1 (nitrate:nitrite).

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein inorganic nitrate is administered together with at least one polyphenol.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said mammal is a human, a horse, or a dog.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein said mammal is a human.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein inorganic nitrate is administered as an inorganic nitrate salt.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the inorganic nitrate salt is administered at a dose of about 0.1-1 mmol/kg bodyweight/day.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein inorganic nitrite is administered as an inorganic nitrite salt.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the inorganic nitrite salt is administered at a dose of about 0.001-0.1 mmol/kg bodyweight/day.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition further comprises live bacteria capable of enhancing nitrate or nitrite reduction.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition further comprises an antibacterial compound.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition further comprises ethanol at a concentration of below about 5% (v/v).

The method according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition has a form selected from the group consisting of a liquid, a paste, a bar, a cake, a powder, a granulate, an effervescent tablet, a tablet, a capsule, a lozenge, a chewing gum, a fast melting tablet or wafer, a sublingual tablet, and a spray.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition is in the form of, or constitutes a part of, a food product selected from the group consisting of a liquid, a paste, a bar, a cake, a powder, and a granulate.

15. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the source of inorganic nitrate is selected from the group consisting of a concentrate, a juice and an extract of at least one nitrate-containing vegetable.

The method according to claim 1 , wherein inorganic nitrate is administered and the source of inorganic nitrate is selected from the group consisting of a concentrate, a juice and an extract of at least one nitrate-containing vegetable, wherein said vegetable is selected from the group consisting of green leafy vegetables, spinach, beetroot, fennel, lettuce, cabbage, and Chinese cabbage.

17. The method according to claim 16 , wherein said vegetable is beetroot.

18. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition further comprises an acidifying agent.

19. The method according to claim 18 , wherein said acidifying agent is an artificial compound or a natural juice.

20. The method according to claim 19 , wherein said natural juice is selected from the group consisting of lemon, lime, ascorbic acid, acetic acid, and vinegar from apple or grapes.

21. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic nitrite and/or nitrate is administered in the form of a liquid and said liquid is a beetroot concentrate.

22. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic nitrite and/or nitrate is administered in the form of a liquid and said liquid comprises a beetroot concentrate and acidifying agent.

23. The method according to claim 1 , wherein administration of inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite results in an increase in muscular efficiency.

24. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered to said mammal prior to or during exercise.

25. A method for non-therapeutically reducing oxygen consumption (VO 2 ) of a mammal and enhancing physical performance of the mammal during physical exercise, the method comprising:

orally administering inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite to said mammal in the dose of about 0.01-10 mmol inorganic nitrate/kg bodyweight/day or of about 0.001-1 mmol inorganic nitrite/kg bodyweight/day, and said mammal performing physical exercise, wherein said mammal exhibits reduced oxygen consumption (VO 2 ) and enhanced physical performance during the physical exercise as compared with the physical performance of said mammal during the physical exercise in the absence of administration of the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite.

26. The method according to claim 25 , wherein inorganic nitrate and nitrite are administered in a dose ratio interval of about 5:1 to about 100:1 (nitrate:nitrite).

27. The method according to claim 25 , wherein inorganic nitrate is administered together with at least one polyphenol.

28. The method according to claim 25 , wherein said mammal is a human, a horse, or a dog.

29. The method according to claim 28 , wherein said mammal is a human.

30. The method according to claim 25 , wherein inorganic nitrate is administered as an inorganic nitrate salt.

31. The method according to claim 30 , wherein the inorganic nitrate salt is administered at a dose of about 0.1-1 mmol/kg bodyweight/day.

32. The method according to claim 25 , wherein inorganic nitrite is administered as an inorganic nitrite salt.

33. The method according to claim 32 , wherein the inorganic nitrite salt is administered at a dose of about 0.001-0.1 mmol/kg bodyweight/day.

34. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition further comprises live bacteria capable of enhancing nitrate or nitrite reduction.

35. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition further comprises an antibacterial compound.

36. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition further comprises ethanol at a concentration of below about 5% (v/v).

37. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition has a form selected from the group consisting of a liquid, a paste, a bar, a cake, a powder, a granulate, an effervescent tablet, a tablet, a capsule, a lozenge, a chewing gum, a fast melting tablet or wafer, a sublingual tablet, and a spray.

38. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition is in the form of, or constitutes a part of, a food product selected from the group consisting of a liquid, a paste, a bar, a cake, a powder, and a granulate.

39. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the source of inorganic nitrate is selected from the group consisting of a concentrate, a juice and an extract of at least one nitrate-containing vegetable.

40. The method according to claim 25 , wherein inorganic nitrate is administered and the source of inorganic nitrate is selected from the group consisting of a concentrate, a juice and an extract of at least one nitrate-containing vegetable, wherein said vegetable is selected from the group consisting of green leafy vegetables, spinach, beetroot, fennel, lettuce, cabbage, and Chinese cabbage.

41. The method according to claim 40 , wherein said vegetable is beetroot.

42. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered in a composition and said composition further comprises an acidifying agent.

43. The method according to claim 42 , wherein said acidifying agent is an artificial compound or a natural juice.

44. The method according to claim 43 , wherein said natural juice is selected from the group consisting of lemon, lime, ascorbic acid, acetic acid, and vinegar from apple or grapes.

45. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the inorganic nitrite and/or nitrate is administered in the form of a liquid and said liquid is a beetroot concentrate.

46. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the inorganic nitrite and/or nitrate is administered in the form of a liquid and said liquid comprises a beetroot concentrate and acidifying agent.

47. The method according to claim 25 , wherein administration of inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite results in an increase in muscular efficiency.

48. The method according to claim 25 , wherein said inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite is administered to said mammal prior to or during exercise.

49. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising said mammal performing physical exercise within about 60 minutes of the administration of inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite.

50. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the enhanced physical performance of said mammal during the physical exercise is measured as increased Gross efficiency (GE) and/or increased Delta efficiency (DE).

51. The method according to claim 25 , further comprising said mammal performing physical exercise within about 60 minutes of the administration of inorganic nitrate and/or nitrite.

52. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the enhanced physical performance of said mammal during the physical exercise is measured as increased Gross efficiency (GE) and/or increased Delta efficiency (DE).
