Abstract

A multi-layer laminate may include a substrate, a printed build layer adjacent the substrate and defining a texture having elevated areas and areas of relief, a printed image layer adjacent the build layer, and a coating layer having a mineral loading and a method for creating a textured laminate may include steps to cause the printed image to be in registration with the texture.

Claims (24)

1. A method for producing a multi-layer additive texture high definition image, comprising:

constructing a build layer, the build layer comprising one or more build levels, each of the build levels comprising a surface of one or more heights, the heights being varied and corresponding to an image property in an image, the layering of each build level resulting in a three dimensional textured surface; and

printing an image layer comprising a copy of the image onto the build layer,

wherein an ink is used to construct the build layer and print the image.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the image is directly aligned with the three dimensional texture.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein an image property is color.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ink is an ultra-violet curable ink.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a coating layer is applied to the image layer.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising constructing the build layer on a core substrate sheet, a side of the core substrate capable of being printed upon, an opposite side of the core substrate capable of being affixed to a composite.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the coating layer includes aluminum oxide.

8. A method for producing a multi-layer additive texture high definition image, comprising:

constructing a build layer, the build layer comprising one or more build levels, each of the build levels comprising a surface of one or more heights, the heights being varied and corresponding to an image property in an image, the layering of each build level resulting in a three dimensional textured surface;

applying a mask layer, the mask layer being applied to the build layer, the mask layer comprising a surface on which to apply an image layer; and

printing the image layer comprising a copy of the image onto the mask layer.

9. A computer implemented method for creating a high definition textured laminate, comprising:

receiving a laminate image;

assigning a build value to each of the one or more image properties in the laminate image, the build values comprising a texture specific to the laminate image;

printing one or more build levels onto a sheet of a core substrate to create a build layer, each build level having one or more heights, each height registering a difference in one of the one or more image properties;

printing the laminate image onto the build layer such that it substantially aligns to the texture.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein a coating layer is applied to the laminate image.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising a flood layer, the flood layer being applied to the build layer, the flood layer comprising a surface to print the laminate image.

12. The method of claims 9 , wherein the core substrate, build layer, and laminate image are cured by heat.

13. The method of claims 9 , wherein the core substrate, build layer, flood layer, laminate image, and coating layer are cured by heat and pressure.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein an image property value is for color.
