Abstract

Example methods, apparatuses, or articles of manufacture are disclosed herein that may be utilized, in whole or in part, to facilitate or support one or more operations or techniques for detecting location changes and monitoring assistance data via scanning for use in or with a mobile device. Briefly, in accordance with at least one implementation, a method may include obtaining, at a mobile device, a rough estimate of a location of the mobile device; identifying a plurality of transmitters within a signal acquisition range of the roughly estimated location; transmitting probe requests addressed to at least some of the transmitters; and selectively initiating a passive scan at a receiver of the mobile device if a number of responses to the probe requests received from the transmitters is less than a threshold number.

Claims (51)

1. A method comprising:

obtaining, at a mobile device, a rough estimate of a location of said mobile device;

identifying a plurality of transmitters within a signal acquisition range of said roughly estimated location;

transmitting probe requests addressed to at least some of said transmitters;

selectively initiating a passive scan at a receiver of said mobile device if a number of responses to said probe requests received from said transmitters is less than a threshold number;

obtaining a position fix of said mobile device based, at least in part, on said passive scan; and

restarting a location tracking filter of said mobile device based, at least in part, on said obtained position fix of said mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1 , and further comprising determining whether said mobile device has moved to a different floor or area identified by a location context identifier (LCI) based, at least in part, on signals acquired via said passive scan.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of transmitters are identified based, at least in part, on positioning assistance data received at said mobile device.

4. The method of claim 1 , and further comprising obtaining updated positioning assistance data based, at least in part, on said obtained position fix of said mobile device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said location tracking filter comprises a particle filter.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least some of said transmitters comprise transmitters whose one or more expected signal characteristics exceed a predetermined threshold value.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said predetermined threshold value is user-configurable.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein said one or more signal characteristics comprise at least one of the following: a received signal strength-type characteristic; a round-trip delay time-type characteristic; or any combination thereof.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more of said plurality of transmitters comprises fixed location transmitters.

10. An apparatus comprising:

a mobile device comprising:

a wireless transceiver to communicate with a wireless network; and

one or more processors programmed with instructions to:

obtain a rough estimate of a location of said mobile device;

identify a plurality of transmitters within a signal acquisition range of said roughly estimated location;

transmit probe requests addressed to at least some of said transmitters;

selectively initiate a passive scan at a receiver of said mobile device if a number of responses to said probe requests received from said transmitters is less than a threshold number;

obtain a position fix of said mobile device based, at least in part, on said passive scan; and

restart a location tracking filter of said mobile device based, at least in part, on said obtained position fix of said mobile device.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said one or more processors further programmed with instructions to obtain updated positioning assistance data based, at least in part, on said obtained position fix of said mobile device.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said at least some of said transmitters comprise transmitters whose one or more expected signal characteristics exceed a predetermined threshold value.

13. An apparatus comprising:

means for obtaining, at a mobile device, a rough estimate of a location of said mobile device;

means for identifying a plurality of transmitters within a signal acquisition range of said roughly estimated location;

means for transmitting probe requests addressed to at least some of said transmitters;

means for selectively initiating a passive scan at a receiver of said mobile device if a number of responses to said probe requests received from said transmitters is less than a threshold number;

means for obtaining a position fix of said mobile device based, at least in part, on said passive scan; and

means for restarting a location tracking filter of said mobile device based, at least in part, on said obtained position fix of said mobile device.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , and further comprising means for determining whether said mobile device has moved to a different floor or area identified by a location context identifier (LCI) based, at least in part, on signals acquired via said passive scan.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein said plurality of transmitters are identified based, at least in part, on positioning assistance data received at said mobile device.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , and further comprising means for obtaining updated positioning assistance data based, at least in part, on said obtained position fix of said mobile device.

17. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein said location tracking filter comprises a particle filter.

18. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein said at least some of said transmitters comprise transmitters whose one or more expected signal characteristics exceed a predetermined threshold value.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein said predetermined threshold value is user-configurable.

20. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein said one or more signal characteristics comprise at least one of the following: a received signal strength-type characteristic; a round-trip delay time-type characteristic; or any combination thereof.

21. An article comprising:

a non-transitory storage medium having instructions stored thereon executable by a special purpose computing platform to:

obtain, at a mobile device, a rough estimate of a location of said mobile device;

identify a plurality of transmitters within a signal acquisition range of said roughly estimated location;

transmit probe requests addressed to at least some of said transmitters;

selectively initiate a passive scan at a receiver of said mobile device if a number of responses to said probe requests received from said transmitters is less than a threshold number;

obtain a position fix of said mobile device based, at least in part, on said passive scan; and

restart a location tracking filter of said mobile device based, at least in part, on said obtained position fix of said mobile device.

22. The article of claim 21 , wherein said non-transitory storage medium further comprises instructions to determine whether said mobile device has moved to a different floor or area identified by a location context identifier (LCI) based, at least in part, on signals acquired via said passive scan.

23. The article of claim 21 , wherein said non-transitory storage medium further comprises instructions to obtain updated positioning assistance data based, at least in part, on said obtained position fix of said mobile device.
