Abstract

An adjustable tibial trial insert includes an upper plate having an upper articular surface and a lower plate. A height-adjustment mechanism of the insert is coupled to and positioned generally between the upper plate and the lower plate and is configured to move between a closed position where the upper and lower plates are adjacent each other and an opened position where the upper and lower plates are spaced-apart from each other in order to adjust a height or thickness of the insert.

Claims (17)

1. An adjustable tibial trial insert comprising:

an upper plate including an upper articular surface,

a lower plate,

a height-adjustment mechanism configured to move the adjustable tibial trial insert between a closed position where the upper and lower plates are adjacent each other and an opened position where the upper and lower plates are spaced-apart from each other, the height-adjustment mechanism including:

(i) an actuator having a first end and second end, the actuator pivotably coupled at a pivot point to one of the upper plate and the lower plate near the second end,

(ii) a first tie rod pivotably coupled to the actuator near the pivot point,

(iii) a second tie rod pivotably coupled to the actuator near the pivot point,

(iv) a first linkage including a first link pivotably coupled to the upper plate and the first tie rod and a second link pivotably coupled to the lower plate, the first tie rod, and the first link of the first linkage, and

(v) a second linkage including a first link pivotably coupled to the upper plate and the second tie rod and a second link pivotably coupled to the lower plate, the second tie rod, and the first link of the second linkage.

2. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 1 , wherein (i) when the adjustable tibial trial insert is in the closed position, the actuator is in a first position and (ii) when the adjustable tibial trial insert is in the opened position, the actuator is in a second position.

The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 2 , wherein when the actuator is pivoted from the first position, each tie rod is pushed outwardly towards an outer surface of the adjustable tibial trial insert and is configured to move its respective linkage outwardly, and when each linkage moves outwardly, the first link and the second link cooperate to move the upper plate away from the lower plate and increase an overall height of the adjustable tibial trial insert.

The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 2 , wherein when the actuator is pivoted from the second position, each tie rod is pulled downwardly towards an interior portion of the adjustable tibial trial insert and is configured to move its respective linkage downwardly, and when each linkage moves downwardly, the first link and the second link cooperate to move the upper plate toward the lower plate and decrease an overall height of the adjustable tibial trial insert.

5. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 2 , wherein the first end of the actuator extends through a slot formed in a front face of the lower plate, wherein the slot is configured to allow a user to access the actuator and move the actuator between the first and second positions.

6. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 1 , wherein:

the first tie rod is pivotably coupled to the actuator between the pivot point and the first end, and

the second tie rod is pivotably coupled to the actuator between the pivot point and the second end.

7. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 1 , wherein a central pin pivotably couples each tie rod to its respective linkage such that the central pin pivotable couples the first link, the second link, and the tie rod together.
