Dual lumen catheter with contrastradiography sections to identify the lumens
A catheter has an outer peripheral portion ( 15 ) in the form of a tube and an internal, wall ( 16, 26 ) within the tube forming a plurality of lumens ( 11 a, 11 b, 21 a, 21 b ). Axially extending linear contrastradiography sections ( 17 a , 17 b, 27 a, 27 b ) of radiopaque material are formed at a plurality of intersection points between the outer peripheral section and the wall, the peripheral extent (a, b) of the respective contrastradiography sections being different.
1. A catheter comprising:
a catheter main body having a first and second end, the catheter main body including an outer peripheral section and an internal wall intersecting the outer peripheral section to define first and second lumens extending along a longitudinal axis defined by the catheter main body; and
first and second contrastradiography sections disposed at least within the outer peripheral section, at the intersection of the outer peripheral section and the internal wall, and the first and second contrastradiography sections defining respective first and second different peripheral extents.
2. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the first lumen has a larger cross-sectional area than the second lumen.
3. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the first and second contrastradiography sections are diametrically opposed relative to one another.
4. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the first and second contrastradiography sections together extend over less than an entirety of the outer peripheral section.
5. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the first and second contrastradiography sections extend substantially linearly along an axial portion of the catheter main body.
6. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein respective inner central portions of the first and second contrastradiography sections protrude into the internal wall.
7. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the catheter main body is polyurethane with radiopaque material disposed in the first and second contrastradiography sections.
8. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second contrastradiographic sections is a mixture of white barium sulfate and a polyurethane resin.
9. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the ratio of the first peripheral extent of the first contrastradiography section to the second peripheral extent of the second contrastradiography section ranges from about 1:3 to about 2:3.
10. A method of using a catheter, the method comprising:
placing a catheter in a blood vessel of a patient, the catheter including an internal wall and an outer peripheral section, the intersection of the internal wall and the outer peripheral section defining a first lumen and a second lumen; and
distinguishing the first lumen from the second lumen based on differing peripheral extents of respective first and second contrastradiography sections disposed at least within the outer peripheral section, at an intersection of the outer peripheral section and the internal wall.
11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising placing an opening defined by the catheter at a target position within the blood vessel, the placement of the opening based, at least in part, on distinguishing the first lumen from the second lumen based on differing peripheral extents.
12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first lumen has a larger cross-sectional area than the second lumen.
13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first and second contrastradiography sections are diametrically opposed relative to one another.
14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first and second contrastradiography sections together extend over less than an entirety of the outer peripheral section.
15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the ratio of the first peripheral extent of the first contrastradiography section to the second peripheral extent of the second contrastradiography section ranges from about 1:3 to about 2:3.
