Abstract

A fiber optic cable includes an optical fiber, a strength layer surrounding the optical fiber, and an outer jacket surrounding the strength layer. The strength layer includes a matrix material in which is integrated a plurality of reinforcing fibers. A fiber optic cable includes an optical fiber, a strength layer, a first electrical conductor affixed to an outer surface of the strength layer, a second electrical conductor affixed to the outer surface of the strength layer, and an outer jacket. The strength layer includes a polymeric material in which is embedded a plurality of reinforcing fibers. A method of manufacturing a fiber optic cable includes mixing a base material in an extruder. A strength layer is formed about an optical fiber. The strength layer includes a polymeric film with embedded reinforcing fibers disposed in the film. The base material is extruded through an extrusion die to form an outer jacket.

Claims (19)

1. A fiber optic cable comprising:

an optical fiber including a cladding surrounding a core and a coating layer surrounding the cladding, wherein the coating layer includes a polymeric inner layer and a polymeric outer layer, the polymeric inner layer being immediately adjacent to the cladding such that the inner layer surrounds cladding layer, the outer layer being immediately adjacent to the inner layer such that the outer layer surrounds the inner layer;

a strength layer a strength layer wrapped about the optical fiber, the strength layer being flat and flexible in an unwrapped state, the strength layer including a polymeric material and a plurality of reinforcing fibers embedded in the polymeric material, the strength layer contacting the outer layer of the coating layer

a first metalized tape having an adhesive surface and an oppositely disposed conductive metal surface, the adhesive surface of the first metalized tape being affixed to an outer surface of the strength layer;

a second metalized tape having an adhesive surface and an oppositely disposed conductive metal surface, the adhesive surface of the second metalized tape being affixed to the outer surface of the strength layer; and

an outer jacket surrounding the strength layer.

2. The fiber optic of claim 1 , wherein the first and second conductive metal surfaces include respective a first and second conductive metal strips disposed opposite the adhesive surface.

3. The fiber optic of claim 1 , wherein the conductive metal surfaces of the first and second metalized tapes are electrically separated.

4. The fiber optic of claim 1 , wherein the first and second metalized tapes each have a width and a thickness, wherein the width is larger than the thickness.

5. The fiber optic of claim 1 , wherein the strength layer includes a first axial end and an oppositely disposed second axial end with the second axial end being rotationally offset from the first axial end.

6. The fiber optic of claim 1 , wherein there is no buffer layer positioned between the coating layer and the strength layer.

7. The fiber optic of claim 1 , wherein the strength layer includes a sheet-like reinforcing structure having aramid yarns held together by a matrix material that maintains a distribution of the aramid yarns around the optical fiber, and wherein the matrix material is bonded to an inner surface of the outer jacket.

8. The fiber optic of claim 1 , wherein the cladding includes a first cladding layer surrounding the core, a trench layer surrounding the first cladding layer, and a second cladding layer surrounding the trench layer, and wherein the trench layer has an index of refraction that is less than the index of refraction of the first cladding layer.

9. The fiber optic of claim 1 , wherein the polymeric inner layer of the coating layer has a first modulus of elasticity and the polymeric outer layer of the coating layer has a second modulus of elasticity higher than the first modulus of elasticity.

10. The fiber optic of claim 1 , wherein an outer diameter of the outer jacket is less than or equal to about 1.2 millimeters.

11. The fiber optic of claim 1 , wherein the coating layer has a diameter of 250 μm or less.

12. The fiber optic of claim 1 , wherein the strength layer has a width that is greater than a height of the strength layer.

13. The fiber optic of claim 7 , wherein the aramid yarns are embedded in the matrix material.

14. The fiber optic of claim 7 , wherein the aramid yarns extends a length of the strength layer.
