Abstract

Systems and methods for providing deeper knee flexion capabilities. In some instances, such systems and methods include a knee prosthesis that includes a femoral component for replacing at least a portion of a distal end of a femur. In some cases, the femoral component has a posterior condyle that is configured to articulate against a tibial articular surface. In such cases, an articular surface at a proximal portion of the posterior condyle is sized and shaped to extend at least half of an antero-posterior distance between a most posterior portion of the posterior condyle and a plane that is a continuation of a distal one fourth to one third of a posterior cortex of a femoral shaft of the femur. Other implementations are also discussed.

Claims (39)

1. A knee prosthesis comprising:

a femoral component for replacing at least a portion of a distal end of a femur, the femoral component comprising:

at least a portion of a posterior condyle,

an interior surface configured to face a resected surface of the distal end of the femur, and

a projection providing an articular surface at a proximal portion of the posterior condyle,

wherein the projection extends, at least partially, anteriorly away from the interior surface.

2. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the femoral component further comprises an anterior condylar extension that is configured to replace a portion of an anterior articular cartilage of the femur,

wherein an inner surface of the anterior condylar extension is configured to interface with an anterior chamfer cut on the femur that runs at an angle between about 35° and about 55° with respect to a longitudinal axis of a distal portion of a shaft of the femur,

wherein an anterior-most portion of the femoral component terminates at an anterior proximal end of the anterior condylar extension, and

wherein the anterior condylar extension is configured to terminate adjacent to a proximal-most end of the anterior chamfer cut.

3. The prosthesis of claim 2 , wherein the anterior condylar extension is configured to terminate within about 10 mm of a proximal limit of the anterior articular cartilage of the femur.

4. The prosthesis of claim 2 , wherein the anterior condylar extension is configured to terminate within about 6 mm of a proximal limit of the anterior articular cartilage of the femur.

5. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the femoral component comprises a first incurved articulation surface disposed at a proximal portion of a medial posterior condyle of the femoral component.

6. The prosthesis of claim 5 , wherein the femoral component comprises a second incurved articulation surface disposed at a proximal portion of a lateral posterior condyle of the femoral component.

7. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the femoral component is configured to replace a portion of a popliteal surface of the femur when the femoral component is seated on the femur.

8. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the projection comprises a portion of a modular component that is configured to couple with the femoral component.

9. The prosthesis of claim 5 , wherein the first incurved articulation surface comprises the projection.

10. A femoral component configured to replace a portion of a distal end of a femur, the femoral component comprising:

a first posterior condyle; and

a first projection that extends anteriorly away from a proximal-most portion of the first posterior condyle and that provides a first articular surface that is configured to articulate against at least one of a tibia and a tibial component when the femoral component is seated on the femur.

11. The femoral component of claim 10 , further comprising a second projection that provides a second articular surface and that extends anteriorly away from a proximal-most portion of a second posterior condyle of the femoral component, wherein the first posterior condyle comprises a medial posterior condyle, and wherein the second posterior condyle comprises a lateral posterior condyle.

12. The femoral component of claim 10 , wherein the first projection comprises a first incurved articulation surface that is configured to articulate against the at least one of a tibia and a tibial component.

13. The femoral component of claim 10 , wherein the first posterior condyle comprises a medial posterior condyle.

14. The femoral component of claim 13 , further comprising a second projection that provides a second articular surface and that extends anteriorly away from a proximal-most portion of a second posterior condyle of the femoral component, wherein the second posterior condyle comprises a lateral posterior condyle, and wherein the second projection comprises a second incurved articulation surface that is configured to articulate against the at least one of the tibia and the tibial component.

15. The femoral component of claim 10 , wherein a portion of the first projection is configured to replace a portion of a popliteal surface of the femur when the femoral component is seated on the femur.

16. The femoral component of claim 10 , wherein the first projection comprises a portion of a modular component that is configured to couple with the femoral component.

17. The femoral component of claim 10 , wherein the femoral component further comprises an anterior condylar extension that is configured to replace a portion of an anterior articular cartilage of the femur,

wherein an interior surface of the anterior condylar extension is configured to interface with an anterior chamfer cut on the femur that runs at an angle between about 35° and about 55° with respect to a longitudinal axis of a distal portion of a shaft of the femur,

wherein an anterior-most portion of the femoral component terminates at an anterior proximal end of the anterior condylar extension, and

wherein the anterior condylar extension is configured to terminate adjacent to a proximal-most end of the anterior chamfer cut.

18. A method for applying a femoral component to a femur, the method comprising:

preparing the femur to receive the femoral component by removing bone from a distal portion of the femur;

obtaining the femoral component, the femoral component comprising:

at least a portion of a posterior condyle,

an interior surface configured to face a resected surface of the distal end of the femur, and

a projection providing an articular surface at a proximal portion of the posterior condyle, wherein the projection extends, at least partially, anteriorly away from the interior surface; and

attaching the femoral component to the distal portion of the femur.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the projection comprises a portion of a modular component that is configured to couple with the femoral component, and wherein the method further comprises coupling the modular component to the femoral component.
