Abstract

A system to prepare an antimicrobial solution by the electrolysis of brine is presented where the antimicrobial solution is a solution comprising HOCl that contains a HOCl concentration of 100 ppm or more at a pH of approximately 6.5. The system includes an electrolysis cell that is provided with a constant current by a digital DC power supply controlled by a microprocessor and a controlled brine concentration at a controlled rate, which can also be controlled by the microprocessor to deliver a fluid that is continuously observed by a pH probe and an ORP probe that provides input to the microprocessor to adjust voltage, pump rate and/or flow rate in a programmed manner by the microprocessor. A method to produce the antimicrobial solution, including a sporicidal solution, by the novel system is presented.

Claims (21)

1. A method for producing an antimicrobial solution, comprising:

providing a source of sediment free water;

delivering the sediment free water to a first conduit through a flow controller;

providing a source of brine;

delivering the brine through a first pump into the first conduit;

mixing the sediment free water and the brine to form a NaCl solution;

flowing the NaCl solution into at least one electrolysis cell, each of the electrolysis cells comprising an outer tube electrode, an inner tube electrode, a cylindrical porous ceramic membrane situated between the inner tube electrode and the outer tube electrode to define a cathode chamber and an anode chamber, and a pair of end-caps for tangential feeding of liquid to the cathode chamber and the anode chamber, wherein a set current of about 50 A or more is maintained at a constant amperage using a digital DC power supply;

flowing an anolyte solution exiting each of the anode chambers of the electrolysis cells at a set flow rate of at least 50 L per hour into at least one second conduit containing a pH probe and an ORP probe situated downstream and proximal to the electrolysis cell, wherein the pH probe has a first electrical connection providing a first input signal to a microprocessor and the ORP probe has a second electrical connection providing a second input signal to a microprocessor, wherein the microprocessor has software to accept multiple input signals and generate multiple output signals, and wherein at least one of the input signals accepts the first input signal and at least one of the input signals accepts the second input signal and output signals to at least the first pump, the flow controller, and the digital DC power supply, wherein a set pH value of 6.2 to 6.8 is maintained within at least ±0.2 pH units of the set value at the pH probe and a nearly constant set ORP of about 880 mV at the ORP probe with a high conversion of NaCl to HOCl indicative by a conductance of the anolyte solution of less than 15 mS;

delivering the anolyte solution into an anolyte storage tank connected to the at least one second conduit, wherein the anolyte solution is an antimicrobial solution comprising HOCl with a HOCl concentration of at least 500 ppm and wherein the concentration of HOCl exceeds 450 ppm throughout 60 to 180 days; and

optionally storing the anolyte solution up to 180 days.

2. The method for producing an antimicrobial solution according to claim 1 , wherein the ORP is 880 mV, the pH is 6.4±0.2.

3. The method for producing an antimicrobial solution according to claim 1 , wherein the digital DC power supply has an AC input of 208 to 220 V and a DC output of up to 100 A and up to 100 V to the electrolysis cell.

4. The method for producing an antimicrobial solution according to claim 1 , wherein one of the electrodes is an anode and comprises a titanium cylinder coated with a mixed metal oxide comprising ruthenium oxide.

5. The method for producing an antimicrobial solution according to claim 1 , further comprising measuring a flow of the anolyte solution using at least one flow indicator to deliver a third input signal to the microprocessor.

6. The method for producing an antimicrobial solution according to claim 1 , further comprising:

providing a source of a cleaning solution, wherein the cleaning solution comprises HCl;

providing at least one first automated switching valve;

flowing the cleaning solution via a second pump into the first conduit when the at least one switching valve stops the flow of the NaCl solution and accepts the cleaning solution; and

actuating at least one second automated valve from the at least one second conduit to direct the flow of the anolyte solution away from the anolyte storage tank;

actuating the at least one first automatic switching valve to accept the cleaning solution into the first conduit; when the software run on the microprocessor determines based on the input signals that electrolysis cell cleaning is required when the set pH, set ORP and set flow rate values cannot be maintained by changing the output brine pumping rate, flow rate and power supply voltage.

7. The method for producing an antimicrobial solution according to claim 6 , wherein the first and second automated valve are actuated on a schedule that overrides the program based on the input signals, wherein NaCl solution is flowing in the first conduit and the anolyte solution being directed to the anolyte storage tank for 4 to 6 hours and the flow is directed away from the anolyte storage tank for 2 to 3 hours while the cleaning solution is flowing in the first conduit.
