Abstract

Disclosed are pharmaceutical compositions and methods for treating or preventing muscle diseases or the symptoms thereof. The compositions typically include and the methods typically utilize phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitors.

Claims (18)

1. A method for reducing skeletal muscle fatigue after exercise in a patient having muscular dystrophy, the method comprising administering to the patient before exercise an effective amount of a phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor or a pharmaceutical salt thereof selected from the group consisting of sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, and PF-581253.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor is sildenafil citrate.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor is tadalafil.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the patient has DMD.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the patient has BMD.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor is administered daily at a dose of about 10-30 mg/kg body mass.

7. A method for reducing skeletal muscle edema after exercise in a patient having muscular dystrophy, the method comprising administering to the patient before exercise an effective amount of a phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor or a pharmaceutical salt thereof selected from the group consisting of sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, and PF-581253.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor is sildenafil citrate.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor is tadalafil.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the patient has DMD.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the patient has BMD.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor is administered daily at a dose of about 10-30 mg/kg body mass.

13. A method for reducing skeletal muscle damage after exercise in a patient having muscular dystrophy, the method comprising administering to the patient before exercise an effective amount of a phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor or a pharmaceutical salt thereof selected from the group consisting of sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, and PF-581253.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor is sildenafil citrate.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor is tadalafil.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the patient has DMD.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the patient has BMD.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitor is administered daily at a dose of about 10-30 mg/kg body mass.
