Abstract

Methods and systems of enhanced carbon dioxide recovery from an inlet gas stream are provided, by introducing the gas stream to one or more membrane-based separation units to produce a permeate byproduct gas stream having increased concentration of carbon dioxide compared to the inlet gas stream and then introducing the permeate byproduct gas stream to one or more pressure swing adsorption units or trains to enhance recovery of hydrocarbons, such as methane, lost in the byproduct stream and to produce a substantially pure carbon dioxide stream, while minimizing process compression and eliminating process heat for process regeneration. The methods introduced herein are for enhancing product recovery by enhancing carbon dioxide recovery from gas streams with pressures greater than atmospheric conditions. Further refinement to the methods would be the introduction of hydrogen sulfide polishing units within the process to produce product that meets or exceeds sales quality specifications.

Claims (38)

1. A method of enhanced carbon dioxide recovery from an inlet gas stream, the method comprising the steps of:

introducing an inlet gas stream, having carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, to one or more hydrogen sulfide polishing units;

operating the one or more hydrogen sulfide polishing units to produce an outlet gas stream with a reduced concentration of hydrogen sulfide compared to the inlet gas stream;

introducing the outlet gas stream to one or more membrane-based separation units;

operating the one or more membrane-based separation units to produce a permeate byproduct gas stream having increased concentration of carbon dioxide compared to the carbon dioxide concentration in the outlet gas stream;

directly introducing the permeate byproduct gas stream to one or more pressure swing adsorption units without compression; and

operating the one or more pressure swing adsorption units to produce a substantially pure carbon dioxide stream comprising substantially all of the carbon dioxide from the permeate byproduct gas stream in a single pass.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

operating the one or more membrane-based separation unit to produce a retentate gas stream having hydrogen sulfide;

introducing the retentate gas stream to one or more post-membrane hydrogen sulfide polishing units; and

operating the one or more post-membrane hydrogen sulfide polishing units to produce a reduced hydrogen sulfide outlet gas stream with a reduced concentration of hydrogen sulfide compared to the retentate gas stream.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the permeate byproduct gas stream comprises less than 70% by molar basis carbon dioxide.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the permeate byproduct gas stream comprises less than 50% by molar basis carbon dioxide.

5. An enhanced carbon dioxide recovery system, the system comprising:

one or more hydrogen sulfide polishing units that is operable to receive an inlet gas stream having carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide and to produce an outlet gas stream with a reduced concentration of hydrogen sulfide compared to the inlet gas stream;

one or more membrane-based separation units that fluidly couples to the one or more hydrogen sulfide polishing units and that is operable to receive the outlet gas stream and to produce a permeate byproduct gas stream having increased concentration of carbon dioxide compared to the carbon dioxide concentration in the outlet gas stream; and

one or more pressure swing adsorption units that fluidly couples directly to the one or more membrane-based separation units without compression and that is operable to receive the permeate byproduct gas stream and to produce a substantially pure carbon dioxide stream comprising substantially all of the carbon dioxide from the permeate byproduct gas stream in a single pass.

6. The enhanced carbon dioxide recovery system of claim 5 , wherein the one or more membrane-based separation units further is operable to produce a retentate gas stream having hydrogen sulfide.

7. The system according to claim 5 , wherein the permeate byproduct gas stream comprises less than 70% by molar basis carbon dioxide.

8. The system according to claim 5 , wherein the permeate byproduct gas stream comprises less than 50% by molar basis carbon dioxide.

9. An enhanced carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide recovery system, the system comprising:

one or more membrane-based separation units positioned to receive an inlet gas containing one or more of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide and operably process the inlet gas thereby to produce respective and separate retentate outputs and permeate outputs therefrom;

one or more hydrogen sulfide polishing units positioned to process the inlet gas prior to supply to the one or more membrane-based separation units;

one or more hydrogen sulfide polishing units operably positioned to process the retentate outputs from the one or more membrane-based separation units;

a first pressure swing adsorption unit coupled directly to the one or more membrane-based separation units without compression to remove hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from the permeate outputs of the one or more membrane-based separation units prior to subsequent processing; and

a second pressure swing adsorption unit in fluid communication with the first pressure swing adsorption unit operably positioned to receive and separate heavy stream outputs from the first pressure swing adsorption unit to produce a purified CO 2 stream, comprising substantially all of the CO 2 from the heavy stream outputs, and purified H 2 S as outputs therefrom responsive to preselected adsorption-desorption characteristics of these gas components to adsorbents.

10. An enhanced carbon dioxide recovery system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the first and second pressure swing adsorption units comprise two or more pressure swing adsorption trains to separately purify hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from the permeate outputs of the one or more membrane-based separation units, the two or more pressure swing adsorption trains being operable in scheduled and synchronized manners.

11. A system as defined in claim 10 , wherein each of the two or more pressure swing adsorption trains includes one or more individual beds.

12. A system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the two or more pressure swing adsorption trains produce a purified hydrocarbon stream to operably combine with sales gas and produce a highly purified carbon dioxide stream and a highly purified hydrogen sulfide stream responsive to preselected adsorption-desorption characteristics of these gas components to adsorbents.

13. A system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the two or more pressure swing absorption trains further produce an output of a gas mixture for fuel or other purposes.

14. The system according to claim 10 , wherein the permeate output comprises less than 70% by molar basis carbon dioxide.
