Abstract

An embodiment of the invention includes a surgical device for passing suture through soft tissue. The surgical device can include at least one elongate superelastic member having a thickness and having a first resting configuration that defines at least one curve having a first radius of curvature greater than or equal to 3 times the thickness of the superelastic member. The surgical device also can include a thermally formed opening in the superelastic member, the opening adapted to receive at least one strand of suture. Moreover, the surgical device can include a superelastic member adapted to be straightened into a second configuration having a second radius of curvature larger than the first radius of curvature.

Claims (28)

1. A surgical device for passing suture through soft tissue comprising:

a first elongate member having a crochet hook at a distal end of the first elongate member, the crochet hook for engaging a strand of suture; wherein said first elongate member includes a substantially curved first resting configuration and is compressible into a substantially straight second, stressed configuration, and returns towards said first resting configuration as a compressive external force is reduced;

a second elongate member having a lumen and substantially housing said first elongate member in the second, stressed configuration, the first elongate member completely slideable within the lumen, and wherein the suture is positionable completely outside of the lumen of the second elongate member; and

a grasping mechanism comprising a first jaw and a second jaw connected to said second elongate member at a distal end thereof, with one of said first and second jaws moveable relative to the other, said moveable jaw having an opening that is substantially transverse to a long axis of the moveable jaw for allowing the first elongate member therethrough,

wherein said grasping mechanism is configured to clamp soft tissue while said first elongate member is configured to advance distally through the soft tissue;

wherein the first elongate member in the substantially curved first resting configuration extends through and beyond the opening in the moveable jaw to pass the suture through the soft tissue; and

wherein in the substantially curved first resting configuration, the first elongate member has a radius of curvature that is at least three times a diameter of the first elongate member.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the opening in said moveable jaw extends through a middle region of said moveable jaw such that said moveable jaw is removable from around a side of a strand of suture that has been retracted through the soft tissue.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first elongate member is substantially non-hollow.

4. A surgical device for passing suture through soft tissue, the device comprising:

an elongate member having a substantially curved, unstressed configuration, a substantially straight stressed configuration, and a crochet hook at a distal end of the elongate member, the crochet hook for holding a strand of suture;

an elongate tube having a lumen and substantially containing said elongate member, the elongate member completely slideable within the lumen, and wherein the suture is positionable completely outside of the lumen of the elongate tube; and

a pair of jaws attached to said elongate tube to clamp soft tissue;

wherein one of said pair of jaws is moveable relative to the other, said moveable jaw having an opening which is substantially transverse to a long axis of said moveable jaw;

wherein the elongate member in the substantially curved unstressed configuration extends through and beyond the opening in said moveable jaw to pass the suture through the soft tissue; and

wherein in the substantially curved unstressed configuration, the elongate member has a radius of curvature that is at least three times a diameter of the elongate member.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein said opening in said one of said pair of jaws extends through a middle region of said jaw such that said jaw is removable from around a side of a strand of suture that has been retracted through the soft tissue.

6. The device of claim 4 , wherein the elongate member is substantially non-hollow.

7. A surgical device for passing suture through soft tissue, the device comprising:

an elongate tubular member having a lumen;

a suture passing member having a substantially curved, unstressed configuration, a substantially straight stressed configuration, and a crochet hook configured to carry a strand of suture at a distal end of the suture passing member, wherein the suture passing member is completely slideable and housed substantially within said lumen, and wherein the suture is positionable completely outside of the lumen of the elongate tubular member; and

a grasping mechanism comprising a first jaw and a second jaw connected to said elongate tubular member at a distal end thereof, with one jaw of said first and second jaws moveable relative to the other;

wherein said grasping mechanism is configured to clamp soft tissue while the suture passing member is retracted within the lumen through an opening, which is substantially transverse to a long axis of the one jaw, in said moveable jaw of said first and second jaws of said grasping mechanism;

wherein the suture passing member in the substantially curved unstressed configuration extends through and beyond the opening in said moveable jaw to pass the strand of suture through the soft tissue; and

wherein in the substantially curved unstressed configuration, the suture passing member has a radius of curvature that is at least three times a diameter of the suture passing member.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein said opening in said one jaw extends through a middle region of said one jaw such that said one jaw is removable from around a side of a strand of suture that has been passed into the soft tissue.

9. The device of claim 7 , further comprising a handle to manipulate movement of one of the first and second jaws.

10. The device of claim 7 , wherein the suture passing member is substantially non-hollow.
