Abstract

A resorbable bone graft scaffold material, including a plurality of overlapping and interlocking fibers defining a scaffold structure, plurality of pores distributed throughout the scaffold, and a plurality of glass microspheres distributed throughout the pores. The fibers are characterized by fiber diameters ranging from about 5 nanometers to about 100 micrometers, and the fibers are a bioactive, resorbable material. The fibers generally contribute about 20 to about 40 weight percent of the scaffold material, with the microspheres contributing the balance.

Claims (17)

1. A resorbable bone graft scaffold material, comprising:

a plurality of overlapping and interlinking nonporous, polymer-free bioactive ceramic fibers defining a scaffold structure;

a plurality of pores distributed throughout and defined by the scaffold; and

a first plurality of first bioactive, resorbable spheres distributed in at least some of the respective pores;

wherein each respective first sphere is fused to at least one ceramic fiber;

a second plurality of second loose bioactive, resorbable spheres, wherein each respective second loose sphere is not fused to a fiber;

wherein the fibers are characterized by fiber diameters ranging from 5 nanometers to 100 micrometers;

wherein the fibers are composed of a bioactive, resorbable material.

2. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the fibers are composed of a material selected from the group including calcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, bioactive glass and combinations thereof.

3. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the fibers are composed of 45S5 bioactive glass.

4. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the first spheres are solid and have the same composition as the fibers.

The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the first spheres are hollow defining respective inner core volumes; and wherein each respective inner core volume is filled with a filling selected from the group including medicines, nutritive supplements, antibiotics, antivirals, vitamins and combinations thereof.

6. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the fiber diameters are substantially between 10 nanometers and 10 micrometers.

7. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the fiber diameters are substantially between 1 micrometer and 10 micrometers.

8. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the fiber diameters are substantially less than 400 nanometers.

9. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the plurality of overlapping and interlinking fibers are at least partially fused together.

10. The resorbable bone graft scaffold material of claim 1 wherein the spheres have diameters ranging from 30 microns to 3 millimeters.
