Abstract

A crutch for assisting a user to walk includes a leg platform configured to support a portion of a leg of the user, and a ground contact having a weight supporting medial contact region that is disposed higher than a weight supporting lateral contact region. An optional strap on the leg platform can be used to maintain the leg in a forward position. An optional thigh saddle can be used to help prevent lateral movement of the user's upper thigh with respect to the crutch. An optional front facing handle can assist new users in learning to use the crutch.

Claims (44)

1. A crutch configured to accommodate different circumference legs, comprising:

a frame;

a lower leg platform coupled to the frame;

a thigh fastener coupled to the frame through medial and lateral arms;

independently adjustable medial and lateral mechanisms configured to fix the angular positions at which the medial and lateral arms, respectively, extend from the frame, and

a handle coupled to the frame, wherein a top of the handle is positioned within 10 cm of a top of the frame.

2. The crutch of claim 1 , wherein the medial arm is at least partially rigid, and has a length of at least 4 cm.

3. The crutch of claim 1 , further comprising at least one foot receiving downward force from the frame, and having a medial ground contact portion elevated at least 1 mm relative to a lateral ground contact portion when weight is being transmitted vertically through the crutch to the ground.

4. The crutch of claim 3 , wherein the foot has a curved lateral edge.

5. The crutch of claim 3 , further comprising a mechanism configured to adjust a height difference between the medial ground contact portion contact and the lateral ground contact portion.

6. The crutch of claim 3 , wherein the medial ground contact portion and the lateral ground contact portion are separated by at least 2 cm.

7. The crutch of claim 3 , wherein the medial ground contact portion and the lateral ground contact portion are separated by at least 5 cm.

8. The crutch of claim 1 , wherein the handle is positioned such that a median sagittal plane of the crutch passes through at least a portion of the handle.

9. The crutch of claim 1 , wherein the lower leg platform transitions from a more “U” shaped anterior portion to a more “V” shaped posterior portion.

10. The crutch of claim 1 , further comprising a forward fastener positioned to draw a user's knee anteriorly and inferiorly.

11. The crutch of claim 10 , further comprising a rear fastener configured to fasten a mid portion of the user's lower leg to the lower leg platform.

12. The crutch of claim 1 , further comprising a ground contact having a weight-supporting medial ground contact portion and a weight-supporting lateral ground contact portion, wherein the lateral ground contact portion is disposed on a pad having a sagitally oriented lateral rocker configuration.

13. The crutch of claim 1 , further comprising a ground contact having a weight-supporting medial ground contact portion and a weight-supporting lateral ground contact portion, wherein the medial ground contact portion is disposed on a pad having a sagitally oriented medial rocker configuration.

14. The crutch of claim 1 , further comprising a foot rotatable relative to the frame.

15. The crutch of claim 1 , further comprising a foot rotatable with respect to the lower leg platform.

16. A crutch having one foot, comprising:

a frame;

a lower leg platform, at least a portion of which is positioned posteriorly to the frame;

the foot of the crutch is mechanically coupled to the frame, and disposed off center relative to a median sagittal plane of the crutch; and

wherein the foot receiving downward force from the frame, and has a medial ground contact portion elevated at least 1 mm relative to lateral ground contact portion when weight is being transmitted vertically through the crutch to the ground.

17. The crutch of claim 16 , further comprising a handle coupled to the frame, and positioned such that a median sagittal plane of the crutch passes through at least a portion of the handle.

18. The crutch of claim 17 , wherein at least a portion of the handle positioned anteriorly to at least a portion of the lower leg platform.

19. The crutch of claim wherein a top of the handle is positioned within 17 cm of a top of the frame.

20. The crutch of claim wherein a top of the handle is positioned within 17 cm of a top of the frame.

21. The crutch of claim 16 , wherein the lower leg platform transitions from a more “U” shaped anterior portion to a more “V” shaped posterior portion.

22. The crutch of claim 16 , further comprising a first fastener positioned to draw a user's knee anteriorly and inferiorly.

23. The crutch of claim 22 , further comprising a second fastener configured to fasten a mid portion of the user's lower leg to the lower leg platform.

24. The crutch of claim 16 , further comprising:

a thigh fastener coupled to the frame through medial and lateral arms; and

independently adjustable medial and lateral mechanisms configured to fix the angular positions at which the medial and lateral arms, respectively, extend from the frame.

25. The crutch of claim 24 , wherein the medial arm is at least partially rigid, and has a length of at least 4 cm.

26. The crutch of claim 16 , wherein the lateral ground contact portion is disposed on a pad having a sagitally oriented lateral rocker configuration.

27. The crutch of claim 16 , wherein the medial ground contact portion is disposed on a pad having a sagitally oriented medial rocker configuration.

28. The crutch of claim 16 , wherein the foot is rotatable with respect to the frame.

29. The crutch of claim 16 , wherein the foot rotatable with respect to the lower leg platform.

30. The crutch of claim 16 , wherein the foot has a curved lateral edge.

31. The crutch of claim 16 , further comprising a mechanism configured to adjust a height difference between the medial ground contact portion and the lateral ground contact portion.

32. The crutch of claim 16 , wherein the medial ground contact portion and the lateral ground contact portion are separated by at least 2 cm.

33. The crutch of claim 16 , wherein the medial ground contact portion and the lateral ground contact portion are separated by at least 5 cm.
