Abstract

A method for delivering energy as a function of degree coupling may utilize an external unit configured for location external to a body of a subject and at least one processor associated with the implant unit and configured for electrical communication with a power source. The method may determine a degree of coupling between the primary antenna and a secondary antenna associated with the implant unit, and regulate delivery of power to the implant unit based on the degree of coupling between the primary antenna and the secondary antenna.

Claims (12)

1. A system for the treatment of sleep apnea, the system comprising:

a flexible carrier;

at least one pair of stimulation electrodes disposed on the carrier; and

a neurostimulation device configured to transfer power to the at least one pair of stimulation electrodes;

wherein the flexible carrier is configured for location proximate to a genioglossus muscle of a subject such that the at least one pair of stimulation electrodes cause dilation of an airway of the subject solely through stimulation of a portion of the subject's hypoglossal nerve through application of an electric field to a single section of a medial branch of the hypoglossal nerve distal of a terminal bifurcation of the hypoglossal nerve into lateral and medial branches.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the flexible carrier is configured to be located between the genioglossus muscle and an adjacent muscle.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the adjacent muscle is a mylohyoid muscle.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the flexible carrier is configured to be located at a position between the genioglossus muscle and the geniohyoid muscle.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pair of stimulation electrodes are spaced apart by a distance of 1 mm to 10 mm.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pair of stimulation electrodes are configured to provide stimulation using less than 1.6 milliamps of current.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pair of stimulation electrodes are configured to generate an electric field having electric field lines that run partially or substantially parallel to nerve fibers of the medial branch of the hypoglossal nerve.

8. The system of claim 2 , wherein the flexible carrier is configured to position the at least one pair of stimulation electrodes to stimulate terminal fibers of the medial branch.
