Abstract

An oral product includes a body that is wholly receivable in an oral cavity. The body includes a polymer matrix and one or more flavorants and/or active ingredients embedded in the polymer matrix. The polymer matrix can include a copolymer of ethylene and one or more vinyl monomers or zein. For example, the polymer can be ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and/or ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer. In some cases, the oral product can include tobacco and/or nicotine.

Claims (27)

1. An oral product, comprising a body that is wholly receivable in an oral cavity, the body comprising:

a polymer matrix comprising ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer that is extrudable at temperatures of about 100° C. or less; and

one or more flavors or active ingredients dispersed in the polymer matrix.

2. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the oral product includes celluloid fibers.

3. The oral product of claim 2 , wherein the oral product includes at least 10 wt % of celluloid fibers.

4. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the copolymer is a random copolymer.

5. The oral product of claim 1 , further comprising a plasticizer dispersed in the polymer matrix.

6. The oral product of claim 5 , wherein the plasticizer is selected from the group consisting of propylene glycol, glycerin, vegetable oil, triglycerides, and combinations thereof.

7. The oral product of claim 1 , further comprising a sweetener dispersed in the polymer matrix.

8. The oral product of claim 7 , wherein the sweetener is selected from the group consisting of saccharine, sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame potassium, and combinations thereof.

9. The oral product of claim 1 , comprising an additive selected from the group consisting of minerals, vitamins, dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, energizing agents, soothing agents, amino acids, chemesthesis agents, antioxidants, botanicals, teeth whitening agents, therapeutic agents, and combinations thereof, wherein the additive is dispersed in the body such that the additive is released when the body is held within a mouth of an adult tobacco consumer.

10. The oral product of claim 1 , further comprising citric acid.

11. The oral product of claim 1 , further comprising a surfactant.

12. The oral product of claim 11 , wherein the oral product includes between 1 and 15 percent by weight of the surfactant.

13. The oral product of claim 1 , further comprising encapsulated flavorant or active ingredient within the polymer matrix.

14. The oral product of claim 1 , further comprising encapsulated nicotine.

15. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer includes between 25% by weight and 40% by weight of vinyl alcohol.

16. An oral product, comprising a body that is wholly receivable in an oral cavity, the body comprising:

a polymer matrix comprising ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer that is extrudable at temperatures of about 100° C. or less; and

tobacco embedded in the polymer matrix.

17. The oral product of claim 16 , wherein the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer includes between 25% by weight and 40% by weight of vinyl alcohol.

18. An oral product, comprising a body that is wholly receivable in an oral cavity, the body comprising:

a polymer matrix comprising a copolymer of ethylene and one or more vinyl monomers;

one or more flavors or active ingredients dispersed in the polymer matrix; and

encapsulated starch deposits within the polymer matrix.

19. The oral product of claim 18 , wherein the polymer matrix comprises ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer.

20. The oral product of claim 18 , wherein the polymer matrix comprises ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer.
