Abstract

Transmission patterns for pilot symbols transmitted from a mobile station or base station are provided. The pattern allows for improved receipt of the pilot symbols transmitted for frequency selective channels and users. In addition, schemes for improving the ability to multiplex pilot symbols without interference and/or biasing from different mobile stations over the same frequencies and in the same time slots.

Claims (32)

2. The wireless communication apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the time selectivity or frequency selectivity of the channel is a function of mobility of the apparatus.

3. The wireless communication apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pilot pattern comprises a frequency selective pilot pattern for the apparatus.

4. The wireless communication apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the memory comprises a plurality of scalar functions and wherein the processor is further configured to multiply the pilot symbols in the at least one pilot pattern by at least one of the plurality of scalar functions.

5. The wireless communication apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of scalar functions comprises vectors of scalar functions and wherein each vector is orthogonal to each other vector.

6. The wireless communication apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wireless communication apparatus receives signals using a plurality of frequency subcarriers in a frequency range between a maximum frequency and a minimum frequency and wherein each of the pilot symbol clusters comprises a plurality of pilot symbols so that at least one of the plurality of pilot symbols of each of the plurality of clusters is transmitted using a frequency subcarrier other than the maximum frequency or the minimum frequency.

7. The wireless communication apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the frequency range comprises a frequency range of a time frequency block.

8. The wireless communication apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to select the at least one pilot pattern based upon a relationship of a delay spread of the apparatus and the frequency selectivity.

9. A wireless communication apparatus, comprising:

means for storing a plurality of patterns of pilot symbols, each of the plurality of patterns comprising four contiguous clusters, each of the four contiguous clusters located at substantially corners of a hop region to be transmitted from the wireless communication apparatus over a channel; and

means, coupled with the means for storing, for selecting at least one pilot pattern of the plurality of pilot patterns for transmission by the wireless communication apparatus based upon a time selectivity or frequency selectivity of the channel,

wherein the means for selecting the at least one pilot pattern further comprises means for selecting the at least one pilot pattern based upon whether the wireless communication apparatus is to receive a transmission in a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) mode.

10. The wireless communication apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the means for selecting the at least one pilot pattern further comprises means for selecting the at least one pilot pattern based upon a velocity of the apparatus.

11. The wireless communication apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the wireless communication apparatus receives signals using a plurality of frequency subcarriers in a frequency range between a maximum frequency and a minimum frequency and wherein each of the clusters comprises a plurality of pilot symbols so that at least one of the plurality of pilot symbols of each of the plurality of clusters is transmitted using a frequency subcarrier other than the maximum frequency or the minimum frequency.

12. The wireless communication apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the means for selecting the at least one pilot pattern comprises means for selecting the at least one pilot pattern based upon relationship of a delay spread of the apparatus and the frequency selectivity.

13. A method for transmitting pilots in a wireless communication apparatus comprising:

determining a time selectivity or frequency selectivity of a channel of a user; and

selecting a pilot pattern having four contiguous clusters of pilot symbols at the corners of a hop region for the user based upon the time selectivity or frequency selectivity of the channel,

wherein said selecting further comprises selecting the pilot pattern based upon whether the wireless communication apparatus is to receive a transmission in a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) mode.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein determining the time selectivity or frequency selectivity of the channel comprises determining the time selectivity or frequency selectivity of the channel based upon a velocity of the user.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the selecting the pilot pattern comprises selecting the pilot pattern based upon the velocity of the user with respect to the frequency selectivity.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the selecting comprises selecting a number of pilots based upon the velocity.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the determining the time selectivity or frequency selectivity of the channel comprises determining the time selectivity or frequency selectivity of the channel based upon a delay spread of the user.
