Abstract

A panic device operable in conjunction with a local device is configured to unlock a locking mechanism. The panic device can take the form of an electronic key fob, a key shaft, or a key holder. A first trigger on the panic device triggers a local alarm that is on-board or off-board the panic device. A second trigger on the panic device can activate an alarm circuitry that utilizes a local device to provide position information to a distant dispatch station. The local device uses a GPS-aware circuitry or other non-GPS means such as triangulation to determine the position information. The position information can then be sent to the distant dispatch station with or without the aid of the local device.

Claims (35)

1. A hand-carried panic device configured to facilitate entry of a user into a physical space where entry is limited by a locking mechanism, and to use position information obtained by a position-aware facility carried by the user outside the space; the panic device comprising:

at least one of (a) electronics operable to unlock the locking mechanism, (b) a key shaft operable to unlock the locking mechanism, and (c) a holder sized and dimensioned to receive a physical key that is operable to unlock the locking mechanism;

electronics configured to operate an on-board speaker and engage in 2-way communication;

a first trigger that triggers a local alarm;

an alarm circuitry that can be operated to trigger sending of a signal to a distant dispatch station, wherein the signal includes the position information, and wherein the signal is a cell phone signal; and

a second trigger that activates the alarm circuitry.

2. The panic device of claim 1 , wherein the panic device comprises the holder, and wherein the holder comprises a cavity that receives at least an end of the physical key.

3. The panic device of claim 1 , wherein the panic device comprises both the electronics operable to unlock the locking mechanism and the key shaft.

4. The panic device of claim 1 , wherein the local alarm comprises a car alarm.

5. The panic device of claim 1 , wherein the position-aware facility is disposed in the panic device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the signal comprises transmitting the signal in conjunction with a transmitter that is local, but not physically coupled, to the panic device, but external to both the panic device and the physical space.

7. The panic device of claim 1 , wherein the second trigger comprises circuitry that recognizes a voice command.

8. The panic device of claim 1 , wherein the panic device comprises the holder, and wherein the holder houses a speaker.

9. The panic device of claim 1 , wherein the electronics configured to operate the on-board speaker composes a key fob.

10. A method comprising:

using a first device in conjunction with a hand-carried panic device configured to facilitate entry of a user into a physical space where entry is limited by a locking mechanism to determine position information;

transmitting a signal to a distant dispatch station, wherein the signal includes the position information and wherein the signal is a cell phone signal;

wherein the second device includes a position-aware facility; and

wherein the hand-carried panic device is configured to facilitate entry of a user into a physical space where entry is limited by a locking mechanism, and comprises:

at least one of (a) electronics operable to unlock the locking mechanism, (b) a key shaft operable to unlock the locking mechanism, and (c) a holder sized and dimensioned to receive a physical key that is operable to unlock the locking mechanism;

electronics configured to operate an on-board speaker and engage in 2-way communication;

a first trigger that triggers a local alarm;

an alarm circuitry that can be operated to trigger sending of the signal to the distant dispatch station; and

a second trigger that activates the alarm circuitry.

11. A method comprising:

using a hand-carried panic device in conjunction with a hand-carried local device that is local but external to the hand-carried panic device to determine position information; and

wherein the hand-carried panic device is configured to facilitate entry of a user into a physical space where entry is limited by a locking mechanism, and comprises:

at least one of (a) electronics operable to unlock the locking mechanism, (b) a key shaft operable to unlock the locking mechanism, and (c) a holder sized and dimensioned to receive a physical key that is operable to unlock the locking mechanism;

electronics configured to operate an on-board speaker and engage in 2-way communication;

a first trigger that triggers a local alarm;

an alarm circuitry that can be operated to trigger sending of a signal to the distant dispatch station; and

a second trigger that activates the alarm circuitry.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising using a transmitter housed in the hand-carried local device to transmit a cell-phone signal to a distant dispatch station, wherein the signal includes the position information, and wherein the hand-carried local device has no GPS-aware circuitry.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein using the hand-held panic device in conjunction with the hand-carried local device to determine position information comprises triangulation of the cell phone signal emitted by the hand-carried local device.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the signal comprises position information related to the hand-held panic device.
