Abstract

Methods and apparatus related to a LED-based lighting unit ( 10; 110; 210; 310; 410 ) having a radar for presence detection. A radar circuit ( 140; 240; 340 A; 340 B; 440 ) may be electrically coupled to conductive wiring ( 25; 125; 225; 325; 425 ) of the LED-based lighting unit that at least selectively powers the radar circuit and at least selectively powers the LEDs. In some implementations, an antenna coupled to the radar circuit may be formed from the conductive wiring and optionally at least partially isolated from any current flowing through the LEDs.

Claims (31)

1. A LED-based lighting unit with implemented radar, comprising:

a plurality of individually-controllable groups of LEDs;

conductive wiring electrically coupling said LEDs in a series parallel configuration;

a radar circuit electrically coupled to a first portion of said conductive wiring; said first portion of said conductive wiring at least selectively powering said radar circuit and at least selectively powering said LEDs; and

a radar antenna electrically coupled to said radar circuit;

wherein each group of LEDs is individually controllable based on radar frequency signals received at said radar circuit via said radar antenna.

2. The LED-based lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein said radar antenna is formed from a second portion of said conductive wiring having a length substantially matching a radar frequency of said radar circuit.

3. The LED-based lighting fixture of claim 1 , wherein said radar circuit is connected in said series parallel configuration with at least some of the LEDs.

4. The LED-based lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein said radar antenna is antenna wiring sharing a substantially common gauge with said conductive wiring.

5. The LED-based lighting unit of claim 1 , further comprising a controller in electrical communication with said radar circuit and said LEDs, said controller detecting presence events via input from said radar circuit.

6. The LED-based lighting unit of claim 5 , wherein said controller alters at least one light output characteristic of said LEDs in correspondence with said presence events.

7. The LED-based lighting unit of claim 5 , wherein said controller transmits detection of said presence events to a remote receiver.

8. The LED-based lighting unit of claim 5 , wherein said controller adjusts current provided to at least one of said individually controllable LED groups in correspondence with said presence events.

9. The LED-based lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein said radar circuit includes a capacitor coupled to said first portion of said conductive wiring, said LEDs are powered by pulse width modulation, and said capacitor stores energy during highs of said pulse width modulation and discharges during lows of said pulse width modulation.

10. A method of implementing a radar in a LED-based lighting unit, comprising:

electrically connecting a radar circuit to LED wiring that electrically interconnects a plurality of individually-controllable groups of LEDs;

isolating a segment of said LED wiring from a current path for current flowing through the LEDs; and

connecting said segment of said LED wiring to an antenna input of said radar circuit, said segment of said LED wiring at least selectively powering said radar circuit and at least selectively powering said LEDs, wherein each group of LEDs is individually controllable based on radar frequency signals received at said radar circuit via said antenna input.

11. A method of implementing a radar in a LED-based lighting unit, comprising:

electrically connecting a radar circuit to LED wiring that electrically interconnects a plurality of LEDs of said LED-based lighting unit;

isolating a segment of said LED wiring from a current path for current flowing through the LEDs;

connecting said segment of said LED wiring to an antenna input of said radar circuit; and

cutting said LED wiring to electrically isolate said segment of said LED wiring.

12. A method of implementing a radar in a LED-based lighting unit, comprising:

electrically connecting a radar circuit to LED wiring that electrically interconnects a plurality of LEDs of said LED-based lighting unit;

isolating a segment of said LED wiring from a current path for current flowing through the LEDs; and

connecting said segment of said LED wiring to an antenna input of said radar circuit;

wherein said radar circuit is connected in series parallel configuration with said LEDs.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising

electrically connecting a second radar circuit to said LED wiring;

isolating a second segment of said LED wiring from said current path; and connecting said segment of said LED wiring to a second antenna input of said second radar circuit.
