Abstract

Methods and devices for providing improved ultrasound visibility of medical devices intended for intravascular use are described. The inclusion of gas/solid boundary regions within a medical devices improves the resolution of the device under ultrasound visualization. Gas/solid boundary regions may be provided through the use of embedded gas-filled microlumens, microwells, or enclosed pockets within the medical device.

Claims (34)

1. A method of treating a vein comprising the steps of:

advancing a catheter distally across a treatment zone in a vein;

creating a first occlusion in the vein at a distal end of the treatment zone;

introducing a first bolus of media into the vein out of a distal tip of the catheter in a direction towards and directly against a proximal side of the first occlusion when the distal tip of the catheter is at a first position in the vein defining a first volume within the vein between the first occlusion and the distal tip of the catheter at the first position, wherein the first bolus has a second volume that is greater than the first volume;

creating at least a second occlusion in the vein, spaced proximally apart from the first occlusion;

introducing a second bolus of media into the vein out of the distal tip of the catheter in the direction towards and directly against a proximal side of the second occlusion when the distal tip of the catheter is at a second position in the vein defining a third volume within the vein between the second occlusion and the distal tip of the catheter at the second position, wherein the second bolus has a fourth volume that is greater than the third volume; and

withdrawing the catheter from the vein.

2. A method of treating a vein as in claim 1 , wherein the media comprises cyanoacrylate.

3. A method of treating a vein as in claim 1 , wherein creating the first occlusion comprises applying external pressure to the vein.

4. A method of treating a vein as in claim 1 , wherein the second volume of the first bolus of media is within the range of from about 0.05 ml to about 0.5 ml.

5. A method of treating a vein as in claim 4 , wherein the second volume of the first bolus of media is within the range of from about 0.1 ml to about 0.2 ml.

6. A method of treating a vein as in claim 1 , wherein the second position of the distal tip of the catheter is spaced apart from the first position of the distal tip of the catheter by a distance within the range of from about 2 cm to about 6 cm.

7. A method of treating a vein as in claim 1 , further comprising the step of applying external compression to the first bolus of media.

8. A method of treating a vein as in claim 1 , wherein, in at least one of the steps, a portion of the method is performed under ultrasound guidance.

9. A method of treating a vein as in claim 1 , wherein, in at least one of the steps, a portion of the method is performed under fluoroscopic guidance.

10. A method of treating a vein as in claim 1 , wherein introducing the first bolus of media is performed such that the media first travels distally within the vein toward the proximal side of the first occlusion, contacts the proximal side of the first occlusion, and then travels proximally within the vein, away from the proximal side of the first occlusion.

11. A method of treating a vein comprising the steps of:

creating an occlusion at a first position in a vein;

positioning a distal end of a catheter at a second position in the vein to define a first volume within the vein between the occlusion at the first position and the distal end of the catheter at the second position; and

introducing media out of the distal end of the catheter at the second position and into the first volume within the vein;

wherein the media has a second volume that is greater than the first volume.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second volume of the media is at least 110% of the first volume.

13. A method of treating a vein comprising the steps of:

creating an occlusion in a vein;

positioning a distal end of a catheter within the vein at a location proximal to the occlusion, the catheter having a distal opening and a sidewall; and

introducing media through the distal opening to flow towards and directly against a proximal side of the occlusion in a volume sufficient to cause the flow of the media to reverse and advance proximally around the catheter between the sidewall of the catheter and the wall of the vein.

14. A method of treating a vein as in claim 13 , further comprising the steps of proximally retracting the catheter and repeating the creating of the occlusion and introducing of the media steps.

15. A method of treating a vein as in claim 14 , wherein repeating the creating the occlusion and introducing media steps is performed at least about 3 times.

16. A method of treating a vein as in claim 14 , wherein repeating the creating the occlusion and introducing media steps is performed at least about 5 times.

17. A method of treating a vein as in claim 13 , wherein the volume sufficient to advance the media proximally around the catheter between the sidewall of the catheter and the wall of the vein is at least 0.1 mL.

18. A method of treating a vein as in claim 13 , wherein the vein is the saphenous vein.

19. A method of treating a vein as in claim 13 , wherein positioning the distal end of a catheter within the vein occurs less than about 3 cm distal to the superficial femoral vein junction.

20. A method of treating a vein as in claim 13 , wherein creating the occlusion in the vein comprises applying external compression to the vein.

21. A method of treating a vein as in claim 13 , wherein introducing media through the distal opening in a volume step is sufficient to advance the media at least 2 cm proximally from the distal end of the catheter between the sidewall of the catheter and the wall of the vein.
