Abstract

An implantable neural stimulator method for modulating excitable tissue in a patient including: implanting a neural stimulator within the body of the patient such that one or more electrodes of the neural stimulator are positioned at a target site adjacent to or near excitable tissue; generating an input signal with a controller module located outside of, and spaced away from, the patient's body; transmitting the input signal to the neural stimulator through electrical radiative coupling; converting the input signal to electrical pulses within the neural stimulator; and applying the electrical pulses to the excitable tissue sufficient to modulate said excitable tissue.

Claims (35)

1. A method for modulating excitable tissue in a patient comprising:

positioning a controller module in proximity to the patient's body, wherein a neural stimulator without an on-board battery is implanted within the patient's body such that one or more electrodes of the neural stimulator are positioned to apply electrical pulses to neural tissue, the neural stimulator being separate from the controller module and including a first antenna configured to receive an input signal containing electrical energy, wherein the first antenna is a dipole antenna and the controller module includes a second antenna; and

operating the controller module such that the controller module:

generates the input signal;

sends, from the second antenna, the input signal containing electrical energy to the first antenna through electrical radiative coupling, wherein the neural stimulator is configured to create one or more electrical pulses suitable for stimulation of the neural tissue solely using the electrical energy contained in the input signal, to apply the one or more electrical pulses to the neural tissue, to measure one or more parameters of the one or more electrical pulses as applied to the neural tissue, to store energy from the electrical energy in the input signal on the battery-less neural stimulator, and to transmit, solely by using the stored energy, (i) stimulus feedback signal indicating the measured parameters, and (ii) a limit feedback signal indicating that a characteristic of the one or more electrical pulses had been limited such that a charge per phase resulting from the one or more electrical pulses applied at the electrodes would not have exceeded a threshold level;

receives, at the second antenna, one or more signals from the first antenna;

extracts the stimulus feedback signal from the one or more signals received at the second antenna from the first antenna;

adjusts parameters of the input signal based on the stimulus feedback signal; and

in response to the limit feedback signal being received, attenuates the input signal so that a charge per phase resulting from the one or more electrical pulses remain below the threshold level.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

implanting the neural stimulator within the body of the patient such that one or more electrodes of the neural stimulator are positioned to apply electrical pulses to neural tissue.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the implanting comprises implanting the neural stimulator at one of the following locations in the patient's body: an epidural space of the spinal column, beneath or on a dura mater of the spinal column, in tissue in close proximity to the spinal column, in tissue located near a dorsal horn, dorsal root ganglia, dorsal roots, dorsal column fibers and peripheral nerve bundles leaving the dorsal column of the spine.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the implanting comprises implanting the neural stimulator at one of the following locations in the patient's body: abdominal, thoracic or trigeminal ganglia, peripheral nerves, deep brain structures, cortical surface of the brain, sensory or motor nerves.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein the implanting comprises implanting the neural stimulator below the patient's skin.

6. The method of claim 2 wherein the implanting comprises injecting the neural stimulator through a percutaneous penetration in the patient and advancing the neural stimulator to a target site within the patient's body.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the target site is a cortex of the brain.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the target site is within the brain adjacent to or near one of the thalamus, periventricular gray matter, ventral intermediate thalamus, thalamic nucleus, globus pallidus or hypothalamus.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein the target site is one of the epidural space, between the dura mater and the arachnoid membranes or subdurally in the intrathecal space.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the parameters of the input signal include an amplitude of the electrical pulses.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the parameters of the input signal include an impedance of the one or more electrodes.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the neural stimulator is configured to create one or more electrical pulses such that the electrical pulses are charge balanced and result in a substantially zero net charge within the patient's body.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the neural stimulator is further configured to selectively designate a polarity of each of the one or more electrodes.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the input signal has a carrier frequency of about 300 MHz to about 8 GHz.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the input signal has a carrier frequency of about 800 MHz to about 1.2 GHz.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the neural stimulator comprises only passive components.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein the neural stimulator is further configured to:

limit the characteristic of the electrical pulses such that a charge per phase resulting from the electrical pulses remains below the threshold level; and

generate the limit feedback signal when the charge per phase would have exceeded the threshold level.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein operating the controller module comprises operating the controller module such that the controller module further:

obtains a forward power signal that is reflective of an amplitude of a signal sent to the controller module;

obtains a reverse power signal that is reflective of an amplitude of a reflected portion of the signal sent to the controller module;

determines a mismatch value indicative of a magnitude of an impedance mismatch based on the forward power signal and the reverse power signal; and

adjusts parameters of the input signal based on the mismatch value.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein operating the controller module comprises operating the controller module such that the controller module further encodes stimulus parameter information within the input signal and transmits the stimulus parameter information to the neural stimulator through electrical radiative coupling.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the neural stimulator is further configured to create one or more electrical pulses by converting the input signal to the electrical pulses based on the stimulus parameter information encoded within the input signal.
