Abstract

A shelter that includes a slider and a strut mechanism mounted on support posts of the shelter that automatically actuate and extend from the side of the support posts when the shelter is expanded from its collapsed state. The strut mechanism provides support for an eave that extends outside from all or a portion of the perimeter of the shelter defined by the corners of the support posts. An automatic hard-stop mechanism is incorporated into the support posts that prevent the eave sliders and strut mechanisms from becoming over-extended. The support posts are configured and oriented relative to the other components of the shelter frame and shelter boundary so to minimize the footprint or size of the shelter when in the collapsed state.

Claims (20)

1. A collapsible shelter comprising:

a frame structure and a cover enclosing at least a top portion of the frame structure, the frame structure comprising:

a plurality of support posts interconnected to one another by a network of peak trusses and side trusses, each individual truss of the network of peak trusses and side trusses attached directly to a coupling through which a portion of one of the plurality of support posts is positioned;

a strut having a proximal end portion attached to one of the plurality of support posts and a distal end portion extending from said one of the plurality of support posts in a radial direction away from a center of the shelter; and

a strut support having a first end coupled to said one of the plurality of support posts below where the strut is attached to said one of the plurality of support posts, a second end of the strut support attached to the strut and extending away from said one of the support posts in a same direction as the strut extends from said one of the support posts;

wherein the strut forms an angle of approximately 90 degrees with an elongated, vertical planar surface of said one of the plurality of support posts.

2. The collapsible shelter of claim 1 wherein the strut support is attached directly to an eave slider on said one of the plurality of support posts on a side of said one of the plurality of support posts opposite a side of the said one of the plurality of support posts attached to the proximal end portion of the strut.

3. The collapsible shelter of claim 1 wherein the network of peak trusses and side trusses comprises side trusses that form angles of less than 90 degrees with elongated, vertical planar surfaces of the plurality of support posts.

4. The collapsible shelter of claim 1 wherein elongated vertical planar sides of the plurality of support posts are nonparallel to sides of the shelter when the shelter is in a collapsed state.

5. The collapsible shelter of claim 1 further comprising a stop interposed on each of the plurality of support posts between the proximal end of the strut and the first end of the strut support.

6. A collapsible shelter comprising:

a frame structure and a cover enclosing at least a top portion of the frame structure, the frame structure comprising:

a plurality of support posts interconnected to one another by a network of side trusses and a network of peak trusses, each individual truss of the network of peak trusses and the network of side trusses attached directly to a coupling through which a portion of one of the plurality of support posts is positioned;

an eave strut independent of the network of peak trusses having a proximal end portion attached to one of the plurality of support posts and a distal end portion extending from said one of the plurality of support posts in a radial direction away from a center of the shelter;

wherein the network of peak trusses form approximately 90 degree angles with elongated, vertical planar sides of the plurality of support posts.

7. The collapsible shelter of claim 6 wherein the eave strut is supported by an eave strut support.

8. The collapsible shelter of claim 6 further comprising a eave strut support having a first end coupled to said one of the plurality of support posts below where the eave strut is attached to said one of the plurality of support posts, a second end of the eave strut support attached to the eave strut and extending away from said one of the support posts in a same direction as the strut extends from said one of the support posts.

9. The collapsible shelter of claim 6 wherein the eave strut forms an angle of approximately 90 degrees with an elongated, vertical planar surface of said one of the plurality of support posts.

10. The collapsible shelter of claim 6 wherein elongated vertical planar sides of the plurality of support posts are nonparallel to sides of the shelter when the shelter is in a collapsed state.

11. The collapsible shelter of claim 6 further comprising a stop interposed on each of the plurality of support posts between the proximal end of the eave strut and the first end of the eave strut support.
