Abstract

A surgical stapling device comprising a housing, an elongated portion, an end effector, and a movable handle disposed in mechanical cooperation with the housing and movable between a first open position and a second approximated position for affecting a function of the end effector. A ratchet mechanism is disposed in mechanical cooperation with the movable handle and is configured to substantially prevent the movable handle from moving towards its first open position until the movable handle reaches a predetermined position.

Claims (17)

1. A method of firing a surgical device comprising:

moving a handle of the surgical device from an open position toward an actuated position;

engaging rack teeth of a rack of a ratchet mechanism with pawl teeth of a pawl of the ratchet mechanism to prevent the handle from moving back toward the open position;

disengaging the rack teeth from the pawl teeth to allow the handle to move toward the open position by using one of a first method and a second method, wherein the first method includes moving the handle a predetermined distance toward the actuated position such that a cam surface of the rack engages the pawl to disengage the rack teeth from the pawl teeth, and the second method includes engaging an override prior to moving the handle the predetermined distance such that the override disengages the rack teeth from the pawl teeth.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising biasing at least one of the rack and the pawl toward the other.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein moving the handle from the open position toward the actuated position causes the handle to pivot with respect to the rack.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the second method of disengaging the rack teeth and the pawl teeth includes engaging the override which is disposed on the pawl.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein moving the handle from the open position toward the actuated position includes pivoting the handle with respect to a housing of the surgical device.

6. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising moving the handle to its actuated position such that staples are ejected from an end effector of the surgical device.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the cam surface of the rack engages the pawl and causes the pawl to move away from the rack after at least one staple has been ejected from the end effector.

8. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising advancing a knife of the surgical device to sever tissue held between jaw member of the surgical device.

9. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising preventing the handle from moving toward its open position until after the knife has been advanced.

10. The method according to claim 9 , further comprising moving the pawl away from the rack after the knife has been advanced.

11. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising biasing the pawl teeth into engagement with the rack teeth with a compression spring.

12. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising releasably maintaining the pawl teeth and the rack teeth in a disengaged position using a clip.

13. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising moving an anvil assembly of the surgical device relative to a shell assembly of the surgical device using an actuator, wherein the actuator is independent from the handle.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the rack teeth are able to be disengaged from the pawl teeth by the first method and the second method.
