Abstract

In embodiments of RFID-based location determination for antenna power adjustment, a mobile device includes a RFID reader to interrogate and communicate with RFID tags. A control module can utilize a learning algorithm to determine a current location of the mobile device based on physical locations associated with the RFID tags, and an antenna power of a wireless transceiver can be adjusted for a signal strength of a wireless network based on the current location of the mobile device. The learning algorithm can maintain a database that includes information about particular locations or rooms within a residence, the signal strength of wireless networks at the locations, and identifiers of the RFID tags. The learning algorithm can learn context of a user's location with the mobile device to improve utilization of the antenna power of the wireless transceiver, and conserve battery power of the mobile device.

adjusting a rate of the mobile device performing said identifying the RFID tags responsive to exceeding the threshold count.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein said determining the physical locations associated with the RFID tags comprises:

maintaining a database that correlates identifiers of the RFID tags and the wireless signal of the wireless network with the physical locations; and

referencing the identifiers of the RFID tags in the database to said determine the current location of the mobile device.

3. The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein the database includes information about one or more rooms within a residence and the signal strength of the wireless signal corresponding to each of the one or more rooms, and wherein the current location of the mobile device is one of the rooms in the residence.

4. The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein the database is stored locally on the mobile device or is stored on a remote device that is accessible by the mobile device.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the RFID tags are each associated with an object at a respective physical location.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein a learning algorithm learns that the RFID tags are associated with the current location based on information retrieved from the RFID tags, a general area that includes the current location of the mobile device, and a time and a date that the mobile device is within the general area.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein said adjusting the antenna power of the transceiver comprises:

comparing the signal strength of the wireless signal to a first threshold and a second threshold for the signal strength, the first threshold indicating that the signal strength is high and the second threshold indicating that the signal strength is low; and

decreasing the antenna power of the transceiver if the signal strength meets or exceeds the first threshold; or

increasing the antenna power of the transceiver if the signal strength does not at least meet the second threshold.

8. A mobile device, comprising:

a radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader configured to interrogate and communicate with RFID tags;

one or more transceivers configured for communication via respective wireless networks;

a memory and processing system to implement a control module that is configured to:

determine a current location of the mobile device based on physical locations associated with each of the respective RFID tags;

adjust an antenna power of the one or more transceivers for a signal strength of a wireless signal of a wireless network, the signal strength based on a distance between an access point of the wireless network and the current location of the mobile device;

determine that the RFID tags are associated with the current location of the mobile device, the determination including to:

compare a threshold count to a number of times each of the RFID tags has been identified; and

adjust a rate that the control module identifies the RFID tags responsive to exceeding the threshold count.

9. The mobile device as recited in claim 8 , wherein a learning algorithm is configured to:

maintain a database that correlates identifiers of the RFID tags and the wireless signal of the wireless network with the physical locations; and

reference the identifiers of the RFID tags in the database to said determine the current location of the mobile device.

10. The mobile device as recited in claim 9 , wherein the RFID tags are each associated with an object at a respective physical location.

11. The mobile device as recited in claim 9 , wherein the database includes information about one or more rooms within a residence and the signal strength of the wireless signal corresponding to each of the one or more rooms, and wherein the current location of the mobile device is one of the rooms in the residence.

12. The mobile device as recited in claim 9 , wherein the database is stored locally on the mobile device or is stored on a remote device that is accessible by the mobile device.

13. The mobile device as recited in claim 8 , wherein a learning algorithm learns that the RFID tags are associated with the current location based on information retrieved from the RFID tags.

14. The mobile device as recited in claim 8 , wherein, to adjust the antenna power, the control module is configured to:

determine a first threshold and a second threshold for the signal strength, the first threshold indicating that the signal strength is high when the first threshold is exceeded and the second threshold indicating the signal strength is low when the second threshold is not exceeded; and

responsive to the signal strength exceeding the first threshold, decrease antenna power of the transceiver; or

responsive to the signal strength not exceeding the second threshold, increase antenna power of the transceiver.

15. A system, comprising:

radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags associated with a current location of a mobile device, each of the RFID tags corresponding to an object at a respective physical location;
