Abstract

A module for use with a mobile device to measure an aberration of a patient's eye includes a light shaft having a proximal end and a distal end. The light shaft includes a first plurality of optical components arranged to direct light along a first light path to the proximal end, and a second plurality of optical components arranged to direct light along a second light path to the distal end. A connector at the distal end includes at least one guide component for positioning the distal end adjacent to a light detector and a light source of the mobile device. When the distal end is positioned adjacent to the light detector and the light source, the first plurality of optical components directs light along the first light path and the second plurality of optical components directs light along the second light path.

Claims (24)

1. A module for use with a mobile device to measure an aberration of a patient's eye, the module comprising:

a light shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, the light shaft comprising a first plurality of optical components arranged to direct light along a first light path from the distal end to the proximal end, and a second plurality of optical components arranged to direct light along a second light path from the proximal end to the distal end, wherein at least a portion of each of the first and second light paths are coextensive at the proximal end, and wherein at least a portion of each of the first and second light paths are parallel at the distal end; and

a connector located at the distal end of the light shaft, the connector comprising at least one guide component for positioning the distal end of the light shaft adjacent to a light detector and a light source of the mobile device, wherein the first and second plurality of optical components are adapted such that when the distal end of the light shaft is positioned adjacent to the light detector and the light source of the mobile device:

the first plurality of optical components directs light from the light source of the mobile device along the first light path to the proximal end of the light shaft, and

the second plurality of optical components directs light along the second light path from the proximal end of the light shaft to the light detector of the mobile device.

2. The module of claim 1 , wherein the second plurality of optical components comprises a microlens array.

3. The module of claim 1 , wherein the light shaft has a tubular shape.

4. The module of claim 1 , wherein the connector comprises a plate having a proximal surface and a distal surface, wherein the light shaft is a contiguous extension that extends proximally from the proximal surface of the plate, and wherein the distal end of the light shaft defines an opening through the plate.

5. The module of claim 4 , wherein the distal surface of the plate abuts at least a portion of a surface of the mobile device when the distal end of the light shaft is positioned adjacent to the light detector of a mobile device.

6. The module of claim 1 , wherein the at least one guide component is configured to removably attach the module to the mobile device.

7. The module of claim 1 , wherein the light shaft comprises a partition configured to block light from the light source of the mobile device from being directed along the second light path from the distal end to the proximal end.

8. The module of claim 6 , wherein the at least one guide component is disposed along a perimeter of the plate.

9. The module of claim 8 , wherein the at least one guide component is a slot for receiving the mobile device.

10. The module of claim 8 , wherein the at least one guide component is configured to snap onto a portion of the mobile device.

11. A method for measuring an aberration of a patient's eye, the method comprising:

positioning a distal end of a light shaft adjacent to a light detector and a light source of a mobile device;

positioning a proximal end of the light shaft adjacent to the patient's eye;

directing light from a light source of the mobile device into the light shaft through the distal end and through the light shaft along a first light path toward the patient's eye; and

directing light reflected from the patient's eye through the light shaft along a second light path and out through the distal end to the light detector of the mobile device, wherein the first and second light paths are parallel at the distal end.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein positioning the distal end of the light shaft adjacent to the light detector of the mobile device comprises removably attaching the light shaft to the mobile device.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising processing data generated in response to directing the light reflected from the patient's eye through the light shaft to the light detector of the mobile device.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein processing the data comprises measuring a retinal aberration of the patient.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein processing the data comprises processing the data using an application implemented on the mobile device.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising transmitting the data to a separate device, wherein processing the data comprises processing the data using the separate device.
