Abstract

In accordance with an embodiment, described herein is a system and method for providing a job manager for use with a cloud computing environment. In accordance with an embodiment, the system include a job manager that manages the execution of jobs within the cloud environment including their job states. A job manager service provides an application program interface which receives administrative commands to be processed within the cloud environment as jobs. The job manager updates a job registry, including registering instances of the administrative commands together with unique job identifiers, and returning the job identifiers so that a user can retrieve command process status, and the result of the job can be stored in the job registry. For example, the job manager can perform housekeeping tasks, such as purging jobs according to a retention policy, performing any necessary cleanup, and performing security checks to ensure tasks are authorized.

Claims (42)

1. A system for providing a job manager for use with a cloud computing environment, comprising:

a computer, including one or more processors and memory, and a cloud environment executing thereon that supports provisioning of enterprise applications, including

providing, for each service type of a plurality of service types, a service definition package that includes information that enables the cloud environment to provide the service type,

providing, for each service type of the plurality of service types, a service management engine associated with the service type that enables provisioning of a service instance of the service type;

a job manager that manages the execution of jobs within the cloud environment including their job states;

a job manager service that provides an application program interface which receives administrative commands to be processed within the cloud environment, to perform operations including provisioning of the service instance, wherein the administrative commands are processed as jobs;

a job registry that stores information associated with the jobs; and

wherein the job manager updates the job registry, including registering instances of the administrative commands together with unique job identifiers, and returning the job identifiers so that

a unique job identifier associated with a job is used to retrieve an administrative command process status associated with the service instance, and

the result of the job being processed is stored in the job registry.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein job information is stored in a job file shared by a plurality or all of the users within a domain at the cloud computing environment, including defining which user account is associated with each job, wherein the job file and its contents are used in the event of a computer restart.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein each job is associated with a retention period following completion of the job, during which retention period the result of the job is retrieved by the user, and after which retention period the job result is purged.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein access to different jobs is secured to different users, and access to a running job controlled according to each user's security level.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system includes a command line interface that enables the users to interrogate the job manager and its running or completed jobs and job results.

6. A method for providing a job manager for use with a cloud computing environment, comprising, comprising:

providing, at a computer, a cloud environment that supports provisioning of enterprise applications, including

providing, for each service type of a plurality of service types, a service definition package that includes information that enables the cloud environment to provide the service type,

providing, for each service type of the plurality of service types, a service management engine associated with the service type that enables provisioning of a service instance of the service type;

providing a job manager that manages the execution of jobs within the cloud environment including their job states;

providing a job manager service that provides an application program interface which receives administrative commands to be processed within the cloud environment, to perform operations including provisioning of the service instance, wherein the administrative commands are processed as jobs;

providing a job registry that stores information associated with the jobs; and

wherein the job manager updates the job registry, including registering instances of the administrative commands together with unique job identifiers, and returning the job identifiers so that

a unique job identifier associated with a job is used to retrieve an administrative command process status associated with the service instance, and

the result of the job being processed is stored in the job registry.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein job information is stored in a job file shared by a plurality or all of the users within a domain at the cloud computing environment, including defining which user account is associated with each job, wherein the job file and its contents are used in the event of a computer restart.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein each job is associated with a retention period following completion of the job, during which retention period the result of the job is retrieved by the user, and after which retention period the job result is purged.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein access to different jobs is secured to different users, and access to a running job controlled according to each user's security level.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the system includes a command line interface that enables the users to interrogate the job manager and its running or completed jobs and job results.

11. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium, including instructions stored thereon which when read and executed by one or more computers cause the one or more computers to perform the steps comprising:

providing, at a computer, a cloud environment that supports provisioning of enterprise applications, including

providing, for each service type of a plurality of service types, a service definition package that includes information that enables the cloud environment to provide the service type,

providing, for each service type of the plurality of service types, a service management engine associated with the service type that enables provisioning of a service instance of the service type;

providing a job manager that manages the execution of jobs within the cloud environment including their job states;

providing a job manager service that provides an application program interface which receives administrative commands to be processed within the cloud environment, to perform operations including provisioning of the service instance, wherein the administrative commands are processed as jobs;

providing a job registry that stores information associated with the jobs; and

wherein the job manager updates the job registry, including registering instances of the administrative commands together with unique job identifiers, and returning the job identifiers so that

a unique job identifier associated with a job is used to retrieve an administrative command process status associated with the service instance, and

the result of the job being processed is stored in the job registry.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein job information is stored in a job file shared by a plurality or all of the users within a domain at the cloud computing environment, including defining which user account is associated with each job, wherein the job file and its contents are used in the event of a computer restart.

13. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein each job is associated with a retention period following completion of the job, during which retention period the result of the job is retrieved by the user, and after which retention period the job result is purged.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein access to different jobs is secured to different users, and access to a running job controlled according to each user's security level.

15. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the system includes a command line interface that enables the users to interrogate the job manager and its running or completed jobs and job results.
