Abstract

Systems and methods for detecting a likely misuse of a medicament by a user. The system includes a computer communicatively coupled with a dispensing device. The computer receives a usage pattern of a medicament by the user as indicated by the dispensing device and a result of a test correlating with an actual consumption of the medicament by the user. Based on the usage pattern, the computer computes an estimated result of a test corresponding to the at least one predetermined test. Based on a comparison between the estimated result and the test result, a determination is made as to whether the user has likely misused the medicament.

Claims (28)

1. A method of detecting use of a medicament by a user, comprising:

receiving, by a master system, usage pattern data of a medicament by the user, the usage pattern data generated by a locked dispensing device that is configured to dispense the medicament when unlocked;

receiving, by the master system, a result of at least one predetermined test, which was performed on either the user or a test sample extracted from the user, the test result correlating with an actual consumption of the medicament by the user;

computing, by the master system, an estimated result of a test corresponding to the at least one predetermined test, the estimated result based on the received usage pattern data; and

determining whether the user misused the medicament by comparing the estimated result and the test result.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the usage pattern data includes one or more dispensing events of a dispensing device containing the medicament.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the usage pattern data includes information regarding one or both of the time of a dispensing event and the amount of the medicament being dispensed at a dispensing event.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dispensing device comprises:

a processing unit configured to generate the usage pattern data;

a locking unit, such that the dispensing unit can be locked or unlocked and is capable of dispensing the medicament only when unlocked with the access authorization data; and

an input evaluation unit configured to receive access authorization data and controlling the locking unit to unlock the dispensing unit in response to receiving the access authorization data.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein computing the estimated result is further based on patient characteristics.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the usage pattern data is received from the user, and the access authorization data is provided to the user.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising prompting the user to submit to the at least one predetermined test at a randomly selected time.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing the at least one predetermined test by a portable medical monitor worn by the user.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the usage pattern data received by the master system is transmitted from the dispensing device via a communication channel; and

the access authorization data is transmitted from the master system to the dispensing device via the communication channel.

10. A method of detecting a likely misuse of a medicament by a user, comprising:

receiving, by a master system, from the user, numerical identifying data that encodes usage pattern data of a medicament by the user, the identifying data generated by a dispensing device that dispenses the medicament;

determining, by the master system, whether the user can have access to the medicament based on the numerical identifying data; and

if the user can have access to the medicament, providing to the user, from the master system, access authorization data for the dispensing device;

wherein:

the dispensing device comprises:

a processing unit configured to generate numerical identifying data;

a display unit for displaying the numerical identifying data;

a locking unit, such that the dispensing unit can be locked or unlocked and is capable of dispensing the medicament only when unlocked with the access authorization data; and

an input evaluation unit configured to accept an input from the user and controlling the locking unit to unlock the dispensing unit in response to an input of correct access authorization data.
